DescriptionJOB TITLE: Sr. Manager, Quality Control
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid in our Westwood Office, 3-4 days/ week)
REPORTS TO: Head of Data
The Role:The Quality Control function at Sunbit is responsible for answering a fundamental question: are our critical lending processes, credit policies, merchant controls, and product workflows executing correctly, for every borrower, across every merchant, every day? This team provides independent, first-line oversight by building and operating data-driven monitoring capabilities that detect both individual defects and systemic failures before they become compliance events or customer harms.
As Sr. Manager, Quality Control Monitoring, you will architect and lead this function. This is a leadership role at the intersection of data, compliance, and operational risk. You will design the modern monitoring platform, analytical frameworks, and governance processes that enable continuous, automated oversight of Sunbit's lending operations: covering credit underwriting, merchant agreement compliance, and critical business processes. You will report to the VP of Data and operate in a matrixed structure, partnering closely with Decisioning (Credit Policy), Product, Engineering, Compliance, Legal, and Operations to embed quality controls at both the prevention and detection layers.
RequirementsWhat you'll do:- Automate preventative monitoring across domains: Design and implement automated preventative monitoring capabilities that achieve near-real-time, high-coverage oversight across the core domains: credit underwriting policy execution, merchant agreement compliance, and critical business process controls, moving beyond periodic sampling to systematic, data-driven detection across the full transaction volume where feasible.
- Credit underwriting oversight: Monitor credit underwriting policy execution end-to-end, ensuring that credit decisions, pricing, adverse action, and origination outputs are consistent with Sunbit's credit policy, model behavior, and regulatory requirements (TILA/Reg Z, Regulation B/ECOA, UDAAP), and flagging deviations for immediate review and remediation.
- Merchant controls monitoring: Monitor merchant agreement compliance across Sunbit's partner network, building controls that detect violations of merchant-facing terms, behavioral anomalies, and process deviations that create consumer harm, reputational, or regulatory risk for Sunbit.
- Business process controls: Monitor critical business process controls across the loan & card lifecycle, including origination, servicing, collections, and customer communications. Ensuring process execution meets internal standards, regulatory obligations (FCRA, UDAAP, applicable state laws), and audit expectations.
- Own the monitoring platform: Own monitoring platform and analytical tooling, establishing automated checks, monitoring rules, and operational dashboards that give first- and second-line partners continuous visibility into control effectiveness and emerging risk.
- Detect and classify: Distinguish isolated defects from systemic failures by analyzing quality findings across the loan & card lifecycle, identifying patterns and root causes, quantifying consumer and regulatory exposure, and driving escalation and prioritization accordingly.
- Drive remediation. Own end-to-end remediation management for QC findings, partnering across Sunbit to drive durable fixes from detection through verified close-out, with full audit trail documentation.
- Measure and report: Define and track KPIs and KRIs for the QC function, including detection rates, escape rates, remediation cycle times, and control effectiveness metrics. Surface results to senior leadership, the Risk Committee, and regulatory examiners in clear, exam-ready reporting.
- Maintain exam readiness: Lead preparation for regulatory examinations, internal audits, and governance reviews by maintaining examination-ready documentation, control methodology workpapers, evidence packages, and QC program governance artifacts.
- Support and validate audit responses: Serve as the primary owner of data and evidence provided in response to state regulatory examinations and capital markets audits, interpreting audit scope, assembling accurate and complete supporting materials, and ensuring responses are grounded in verified, traceable data. Build and operate a pre-submission validation process that checks the accuracy, completeness, and internal consistency of audit responses before materials leave the organization.
- Lead through influence: Thrive in a matrixed environment, influencing outcomes through partnership and credibility rather than direct authority across cross-functional teams.
What You'll Bring:- 8+ years of experience in quality control, compliance risk analytics, operational risk monitoring, or related risk/control functions within consumer lending or fintech.
- 3+ years of people management experience leading QC, risk analytics, compliance monitoring, or control oversight teams.
- Experience designing and operating QC or compliance monitoring programs focused on credit policy execution, loan or card origination accuracy, or lending process compliance.
- Working knowledge of consumer lending regulations applicable to digital or point-of-sale lending, including TILA/Reg Z, Regulation B/ECOA, UDAAP, and FCRA.
- Demonstrated ability to identify systemic risk patterns from large operational datasets and translate findings into actionable remediation with measurable impact.
- Strong cross-functional influencing skills with demonstrated success operating in a matrixed organization, driving outcomes across teams without direct authority.
- Experience interpreting and responding to state regulatory examinations and capital markets audits, including understanding audit scope, marshaling data and evidence, and coordinating responses across internal stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Python and/or SQL for data analysis, automated monitoring, and self-service analytics.
- Experience designing or contributing to a data-driven risk monitoring or control platform from the ground up, including automated rule logic, alert thresholds, defect taxonomies, and remediation tracking workflows.
- Familiarity with credit decisioning systems, including adverse action accuracy monitoring, fair lending analytics, and credit bureau reporting compliance under FCRA and CDIA standards.
- Experience with POS lending, BNPL, point-of-care financing, or merchant-based consumer lending products, or credit card products and the unique compliance dynamics of those distribution models.
- Experience supporting OCC, CFPB, FTC, or state regulatory examinations in a consumer lending or fintech environment.
- Experience building a formal audit response validation process, including pre-submission accuracy checks, internal sign-off workflows, and documentation standards that ensure the integrity and consistency of materials provided to examiners and investors before release.
- Track record of achieving high-coverage automated monitoring, approaching 100% of critical transactions, rather than relying solely on sample-based review.
