OverviewShure's
Cloud Software Engineering team builds the systems that connect our audio products to the people and platforms that depend on them - from software running close to the device, to the IoT infrastructure that carries device state, to the cloud services and web applications used by operators, integrators, and end users every day.
We're growing the team and looking for an experienced engineer who is comfortable working across system boundaries and taking ownership of problems that do not arrive neatly packaged.
This is a hands-on engineering role. You'll write and review code, design systems, debug difficult problems, mentor other engineers, and help the team make better technical decisions. We are looking for someone who creates momentum around them - someone who sees an unclear problem, brings the right people together, and drives it toward a good outcome without waiting for every decision to be made for them.
This role is remote, reporting to our Niles, IL HQ office.
Responsibilities- Own complex features and technical problems across the system, including cloud services, APIs, event-driven systems, web applications, IoT infrastructure, and occasionally the device edge.
- Turn loosely defined product or customer needs into technically detailed solutions. Understand the underlying problem, identify constraints, evaluate alternatives, challenge assumptions where necessary, and drive designs through implementation and production.
- Exercise sound product and engineering judgment. Look for elegant solutions, reduce unnecessary complexity, and maximize the work not done while still solving the customer's actual problem.
- Lead technical work through influence rather than authority by creating clarity, coordinating across engineers and teams, and helping the group converge on good decisions.
- Raise the effectiveness of the engineers around you through thoughtful code and design reviews, mentoring, pairing, technical discussion, and knowledge sharing.
- Work closely with Product, QA, firmware, security, operations, and other engineering teams.
- Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Build software that can be operated successfully in the real world. Consider observability, failure modes, security, performance, cost, maintainability, and deployment strategy as part of the design rather than as afterthoughts.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of our architecture, development practices, tooling, and engineering culture.
Qualifications- A BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
- 6+ years professional software engineering experience and a track record of independently owning substantial technical problems from initial investigation through production.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to become productive in unfamiliar technologies, codebases, and parts of the stack.
- Experience designing, building, and operating production distributed systems or cloud applications.
- Sound technical judgment. You can distinguish essential complexity from accidental complexity, make appropriate trade-offs, and move forward without requiring perfect information.
- Demonstrated ownership and initiative, with the ability to identify problems, create clarity, make decisions within scope, and drive work forward.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex systems, facilitate technical decisions, and respectfully challenge assumptions or direction when you believe there is a better approach.
- The ability and willingness to remain hands-on while helping other engineers succeed.
- Strong debugging and systems-thinking skills. When an abstraction, framework, or automated tool stops working, you can reason about what is happening underneath it.
Valuable experienceThe strongest candidates will bring several of the following:
- AWS or comparable public cloud platforms, particularly cloud-native architectures built around managed services.
- IoT or connected-device systems, including the realities of operating fleets of physical devices (intermittent connectivity, state synchronization, eventual consistency, idempotency, device identity, provisioning, certificate lifecycle, OTA updates, and fleet-scale observability).
- Production experience with TypeScript, Node.js, or comparable modern application-development technologies.
- Event-driven architectures, asynchronous workflows, message-oriented systems, and managed cloud data services.
- Infrastructure as code and automated cloud infrastructure management.
- Customer-facing surfaces, such as modern front-end frameworks (Angular, React, or comparable) and API design across GraphQL, REST, WebSockets, MQTT, or similar protocols.
- Production observability, incident investigation, distributed tracing, structured logging, and operational troubleshooting.
- Embedded C or C++, or enough familiarity with embedded systems to work effectively across the firmware and cloud boundary.
- Mentoring engineers or informally leading small groups or technical initiatives.
