Summary
The Lead Mammography Technologist is a highly skilled imaging professional who performs advanced diagnostic breast imaging procedures, including screening and diagnostic mammography, and supports image-guided procedures. Under the general direction of a radiologist and the Imaging Manager, this role ensures high-quality imaging services while maintaining regulatory compliance with MQSA, ACR, FDA, and CDPH standards.
The Lead Technologist provides clinical leadership and technical expertise within the mammography unit, oversees quality assurance programs, mentor's technologists, and ensures the operational efficiency of breast imaging services. This position plays a key role in enhancing the patient experience by providing compassionate, thorough, and expert care.
Clinical Imaging & Patient Care
3 Performs high-quality screening and diagnostic mammography exams, including specialized procedures such as needle localizations, ductograms, and image-guided breast biopsies.
3 Prepares, positions, and educates patients on procedures, ensuring comfort and cooperation throughout the exam.
3 Monitors patient well-being during imaging and responds appropriately to medical concerns or emergencies.
3 Demonstrates competence in mammographic techniques and equipment operations; adjusts exposure settings to ensure optimal image quality while practicing radiation safety and ALARA principles.
3 Presents patient cases with complete clinical information for radiologist interpretation.
3 Participates in clinical studies, physician assistance, and preparation for procedures requiring sterile technique.
Leadership & Operational Oversight
3 Serves as a lead resource to technologists and support staff in all mammography-related workflows, training, and troubleshooting.
3 Oversees daily imaging operations and ensures timely completion of patient exams and documentation.
3 Collaborates with the Imaging Manager and Radiologists to maintain departmental protocols and high clinical standards.
3 Coordinates regulatory compliance activities and documentation, including MQSA, FDA, ACR, and EQUIP.
3 Supports equipment maintenance, image quality control, and vendor communications; ensures ACR accreditation requirements are met and maintained.
3 Maintains accurate records of equipment performance, staff credentials, physicist reports, and licensing documents.
3 Performs and documents daily, weekly, monthly, and annual QA/QC testing per state, federal, and accrediting body standards.
3 Assists with preparation and participation in audits and inspections.
3 Ensures accurate use of RIS and PACS systems; verifies patient identification, documentation, and image quality prior to submission.
3 Maintains compliance with HIPAA, infection control, patient safety, and institutional policies.
3 Leads or participates in performance improvement initiatives and quality metrics tracking.
3 Compliance, Documentation & Quality Assurance
Minimum Requirements:
Education
3 Associate's degree from an accredited Radiologic Technology program
3 California Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT) License
3 American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification
3 California Mammography Certification
3 Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
3 ARRT Certification in Mammography (M)
Experience
3 Minimum 2 years of clinical mammography experience
3 Proficiency in PACS, RIS, and EMR systems
3 Strong interpersonal, communication, and patient-service skills
3 Experience with EQUIP documentation and MQSA audits
3 Familiarity with Breast Care Coordination software
3 Demonstrated leadership ability with a professional, collaborative demeanor
3 Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
3 Excellent organizational and time-management skills
3 Ability to lead and coach peers while maintaining high performance standards
3 Capable of managing multiple regulatory and quality assurance responsibilities
