OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance provides enterprise-wide leadership and oversight of the Hospital's financial operations, planning, reporting and internal control environment.
Connecting financial strategy with operational decision-making, the Director helps guide the organization through evolving funding models, financial pressures and growth opportunities. The Director is responsible for advancing financial strategy, strengthening fiscal stewardship, optimizing funding opportunities and ensuring regulatory compliance, while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
As a key finance leader, the Director partners closely with clinical and operational leaders to align financial planning with organizational priorities. The role extends beyond traditional financial oversight: the Director serves as a trusted advisor and business partner who supports critical decision-making, identifies opportunities for innovation and efficiency, and helps ensure Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), a division of Toronto East Health Network (TEHN), remains well positioned to deliver on its strategic priorities in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
EDUCATION
- Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) required; CPA, CA is an asset.
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Business, Finance, Accounting or a related field required.
- Master's degree in business administration, accounting, finance or a related discipline is an asset.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5/7 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably at a senior level in a hospital, healthcare organization or other complex publicly funded environment.
- Demonstrated success leading budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit and financial operations.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario's publicly funded healthcare environment and familiarity with Ministry of Health and Ontario Health funding and reporting requirements.
- Advanced knowledge of Ontario Healthcare Reporting Standards (OHRS), MIS guidelines and hospital financial and statistical reporting.
- Strong business and financial acumen with the ability to think strategically while maintaining operational excellence and attention to detail.
- Exceptional analytical, financial modelling and problem-solving skills, including the ability to independently identify and execute opportunities for improvement and strengthened controls.
- Demonstrated experience with financial systems, system implementations and process redesign. Familiarity with SAP S/4HANA, Questica and Cognos is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency with Excel and other financial analysis and reporting tools.
- Familiarity with procurement practices and the Broader Public Sector Procurement Directive is an asset.
- Strong relationship-building, influencing and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively across clinical, operational and corporate functions.
- Clear and confident communicator who can translate complex financial information for diverse audiences, including senior leadership and governance committees.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop people, build high-performing teams and sustain enterprise-wide collaboration.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment and operate effectively in a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment.
- Creative, proactive, adaptable and future-focused, with a commitment to continuous improvement and ongoing professional development.
