The wholesale power industry is in the middle of an exciting transition. Organized day-ahead markets are going live across the West, resource adequacy rules are being rewritten, and new BPA power products start October 1, 2028. This work will take vision, leadership, a focus on efficiency, and the judgment to balance reliability, cost, and risk as the rules of the game keep shifting.
The Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) seeks a
Wholesale Merchant Operations Supervisor to lead our Trading Operations Team through exactly that transition. You'll inherit a team that already knows how to deliver: experienced Real-Time, Short-Term, and Power Scheduling professionals who understand EWEB's hydro assets, how to optimize our portfolio, and the ins and outs of Western power markets. Your job isn't to teach them the basics, it's to give them a strategic vision, remove the obstacles in their way, and help them build the next generation of tools, workflows, and market strategies that this moment demands.
As Supervisor, you'll direct an integrated team spanning Real-Time Operations, Short-Term Trading, Power Scheduling, and Organized Markets, working together, not in silos, to optimize the full value of EWEB's generation and contract portfolio across every time horizon, from the next five minutes to the next market day.
- Supervision and Leadership -Set the strategic direction for the Trading Operations team. Establish clear goals, performance standards, and work procedures. Build a culture where experienced staff are empowered to bring forward new ideas - you'll coordinate training, distribute workload, evaluate performance, and resolve conflicts, but just as importantly, you'll create the space for your team to experiment, automate, and improve how the desk operates.
- Real-Time Operations - Oversee the 24x7 Real-Time desk: load and resource balancing, forecasting, hydro operations, and economic dispatch of generation, ensuring EWEB reliably meets its obligations while capturing value in a fast-moving market.
- Short-Term Trading, Analytics & Power Scheduling -Oversee Short-Term trading and power scheduling. Develop strategy grounded in real departmental data and analytics. Align trading strategy to EWEB's BPA Power Product, contract portfolio, generation assets, and current market conditions to maximize portfolio value and minimize net power costs.
- Organized Markets & Regulatory Compliance - Serve as EWEB's strategic voice on organized markets and the expansion of our participation in day-ahead and other organized market structures. Own every operational dimension of market readiness: systems, staff training, compliance obligations, and coordination with regional market operators and counterparties, positioning EWEB to compete confidently as the rules of the game keep changing.
