The Atlantic is seeking an ambitious and relentless reporter to cover the intersection of technology and consumer culture. This is a role for someone who is obsessed with how-and why-Americans spend their money the way they do.
The ideal candidate will be adept at magazine journalism and eager to produce engaging stories across a wide-ranging beat that encompasses e-commerce and retail, the influencer economy, marketing, travel, and more. The role might involve interrogating the companies and platforms that shape online shopping; analyzing the meaning of the latest trendy products and status symbols; and digging into the invisible logistics of how an item appears at your doorstep. This is for someone who is bursting with original ideas targeted at a general audience; someone who can move fast when a story breaks and go deep when the moment calls for it; and someone who can write clearly and stylishly on a deadline. The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
Qualifications of the ideal candidate: - Substantial experience as a reporter for general-interest publications
- A deep interest in consumerism and an understanding of how to translate compelling ideas into deftly reported and beautifully written stories
- High standards for quality and accuracy and a facility with the ethics and rigors of journalism
- Deep familiarity with The Atlantic
- A great eye for spotting-and a healthy skepticism about-trends
- An ability to work quickly, meet deadlines, and switch gears as needed
- Interest in and openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives
- A desire to write frequently, with authority and humor
