The Team

Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank's Corporate, Investment Banking, and Capital Markets businesses. Within GBME, FX, Commodities, Prime Services, Collateral Mgmt. & Funding Technology focuses on key capital markets systems within the products indicated: Foreign Exchange, Commodities, Prime Services, and Collateral Mgmt. & Funding (repurchase agreements)

The Role

Prime Services Technology is searching for a Software Engineer for Prime Services Data Interface (PSDI) platform - a central operational data store and data warehouse for Prime Services transaction processing systems.

The successful candidate will have a results-oriented and curious mindset with strong technical skills and extensive functional knowledge of capital markets technology domains. You will have strong sense of ownership for system stability and will be responsible for deliveries of new functionality, enhancements to systems. You will have strong technical and dev ops skills with hands on development responsibilities. You will also be involved in designing of new system functionality and features. You will be required to interact with other teams such as Product Development group, Quality Assurance team, support team and other internal Scotia technology such as information security and architecture teams in executing and delivering projects.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • partner with peer engineers, business partners, and the various GBME teams for developing solutions.
  • Work closely with end users, and business teams to understand business needs, conduct gap analysis and requirements assessments as needed
  • Partner with Architecture on the design and integration
  • Deliver and enhance new and current solutions and applications
  • Be involved in the full life cycle of a project, responsible for producing actionable and complete specifications, writing production quality code, and implementation
  • Design, deliver and implement a database schema
  • Design test sets and automate where possible, including functional and non-functional testing, regression testing as well as performance testing
  • Write deployment scripts and leverage tools such as the Accelerator pipeline to promote code
  • Support the solution in production (as needed)
  • Improve the end user experience by finding scalable solutions and addressing complex ad hoc queries.
  • Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Able to work with and refactor legacy code (as needed).
  • Coach and train end users (as needed).
  • Participate in daily stand-ups


Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • 7 - 10 years' experience with OOP Programming, Java, Enterprise Edition Java - J2EE (Servlets, JDBC, EJB, JSP, JMS), Spring Framework
  • 5 + years Unix/ Shell Scripting (Bash, Perl, Python, etc.)
  • 5 + years Database development with Oracle, Sybase, PL/SQL etc.
  • 5+ years in message-oriented middleware such as JMS, IBM MQ, Tibco EMS, Kafka
  • Experience with Oracle and Linux platforms
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and JIRA toolset in particular.
  • 5 + years in UI Framework such as Vue.js (preferred) or similar
  • Streaming architecture and Tools and in particular Elastic Search
  • Experience with DevOps, version control system such as Bitbucket, CheckMarkx
  • A recognized undergraduate degree or diploma in business administration, computer science or related field required.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior development experience in a capital markets Prime Broker role or a trade booking role
  • Prior experience in developing application using SOA architecture
  • Experience with some automated deployment.
  • Ability to communicate with key business and technology stakeholders on a daily basis
