About the RoleSchedule: 14 days on / 14 days off, 12-hour shifts (Flights and camp provided)
Position Reports To: Chief Mining Engineer
Position OverviewAs a key member of Rainy River's Technical Services team, the Senior Geotechnical or Rock Mechanics Engineer provides technical leadership for underground rock mechanics and ground control. The role is accountable for geotechnical risk management, excavation stability assessments, ground support design and optimization, monitoring programs, and practical technical guidance to support safe and efficient mine development, production, and life-of-mine planning; this includes updating relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the ground control management plan (GCMP).
Duties and Responsibilities:- Lead, mentor, and provide technical direction to the underground geotechnical team while promoting strong collaboration with the underground Mine Operations, Mine Planning, Geology, Survey, Ventilation, and external consultants, including the site's Open Pit technical services staff.
- Own, maintain, and continuously improve the site's GCMP, associated standards, including SOPs, trigger action response plans, and geotechnical risk controls.
- Conduct rock mass characterization, structural interpretation, kinematic analysis, and excavation stability assessments for underground development, stopes, pillars, brows, intersections, and rehabilitation areas.
- Complete and review empirical, analytical, and numerical rock mechanics assessments to support mine design, sequencing, ground support, and operational decision-making.
- Develop, review, implement, and optimize ground support and reinforcement designs for mine development, production excavations, rehabilitation, and any areas of elevated geotechnical risk.
- Provide timely geotechnical inspections, hazard assessments, technical recommendations, and documented follow-up for active underground headings and work areas.
- Design, manage, and interpret geotechnical monitoring programs and results, including instrumentation, seismic data, cavity monitoring surveys, convergence measurements, and observational data; summarize the findings and provide recommendations for next steps.
- Investigate ground falls, seismic events, support performance issues, and adverse ground conditions; identify contributing factors and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Perform advanced numerical modelling and specialist studies with external consultants, including defining scope, reviewing assumptions, validating outputs, and translating results into practical design criteria.
- Maintain and update the long-term rehabilitation and ground support replacement plan, including risk-based prioritization and integration with the mine schedule.
- Provide geotechnical and numerical modelling input to the life-of-mine sequencing, stope and development design, pillar design, mine infrastructure, backfill strategy, and mineral reserve assumptions.
- Support geotechnical data management, quality assurance, technical reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate and trial new ground support products, monitoring systems, software, and geotechnical technologies where they can improve safety, reliability, or productivity.
- Participate in operational planning meetings, risk assessments, technical reviews, and emergency response activities as required.
Qualifications and Experience:- Bachelor's degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Civil, or Mining Engineering; a master's degree specializing in rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering is an asset.
- Minimum of seven years of progressive underground mining geotechnical experience, including demonstrated rock mechanics experience in hard-rock mining environments.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario, or eligibility to obtain registration with Professional Engineers Ontario.
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or providing technical direction to geotechnical professionals and operational teams.
- Strong working knowledge of rock mass classification, structural geology, excavation stability, pillar and stope design, ground support systems, and geotechnical risk management.
- Experience with underground geotechnical monitoring and interpretation, including instrumentation and seismic or excavation performance data.
- Proficiency in geotechnical analysis and numerical modelling using Rocscience software (e.g., RS3, UnWedge, and Dips); experience with other software, such as Itasca and Map3D, is an asset.
- Experience with 3D mine design and geological visualization software such as Deswik is preferred.
- Ability to communicate complex geotechnical risks and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong technical writing, professional communication, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance field priorities and longer-term engineering work.
CompensationThe anticipated salary range for this position will be between $145,000 to $170,000.
