Full Job Description
The Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of the effects of sleep loss, circadian disruption, and environmental stressors on human cognition, behavior, and health. Applicants with experience in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply: neurobehavioral and cognitive assessment; human performance in isolated, confined, and extreme environments, including spaceflight and spaceflight analogs; environmental exposures such as noise; wearable and mobile health technologies; and occupational fatigue and safety. Applicants must have an M.D./Ph.D or equivalent degree.
Teaching responsibilities may include teaching and mentoring medical students, graduate students, psychiatry residents, and postdoctoral fellows, as well as lecture opportunities within the department and the Perelman School of Medicine, including courses on sleep, circadian rhythms, and behavioral neuroscience.
Clinical responsibilities may include for candidates with appropriate clinical training and licensure, clinical evaluation and treatment of adults with sleep, circadian, or other psychiatric disorders (e.g., behavioral sleep medicine).
Research or scholarship responsibilities may include developing collaborative and independent research programs on how sleep loss, circadian misalignment, and environmental stressors (e.g., noise, isolation and confinement, spaceflight) affect human cognition, behavior, and health in laboratory, field, operational, and spaceflight or spaceflight-analog settings. Scholarship includes developing and maintaining a program of extramurally funded research (e.g., NIH, NASA, FAA, DoD) and collaborating with the Unit for Experimental Psychiatry on new studies and grant applications.
Candidates should have an established record of independent, extramurally funded research and peer-reviewed publications commensurate with rank, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. The position is based in the Unit for Experimental Psychiatry (www.med.upenn.edu/uep), whose research spans sleep and circadian science, environmental noise and health, occupational fatigue, and astronaut behavioral health, and which operates the Chronobiology Isolation Laboratory at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Rank will be commensurate with experience.
