About the Role:

IMAX is seeking a Senior Optoelectronics Engineer to play a key role in the research, development, validation, and continuous improvement of next-generation entertainment technologies. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer with a strong background in optoelectronics, optics, physics, engineering physics, applied physics, or photonics who thrives at the intersection of theoretical analysis and hands-on product development.

As a senior member of the Systems Engineering team, you will lead the development and validation of complex optical and optoelectronic systems, drive root cause investigations, influence product architecture, and provide technical leadership across multiple engineering disciplines. Working closely with manufacturing, installation, service, procurement, and quality teams, you will help deliver innovative technologies that power the premium IMAX experience around the world.

This role offers the opportunity to work alongside world-class engineers and scientists on some of the most challenging problems in the cinema and entertainment technology industry while contributing directly to the development of groundbreaking visual technologies.

Responsibilities

Research & Development
  • Lead proof-of-concept testing and validation of optoelectronic technologies for current and future IMAX solutions
  • Drive the development and enhancement of IMAX's color calibration systems and software tools
  • Develop and validate component-level and system-level performance metrics for optical and optoelectronic products
  • Design and implement metrology, alignment, and calibration methodologies for complex optical assemblies
  • Contribute technical leadership throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept generation through commercialization
  • Support requirements definition, technical reviews, and future R&D initiatives


Technical Leadership & Systems Engineering
  • Lead technical investigations and root cause analysis of field failures and system performance issues
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship across multidisciplinary project teams
  • Support design reviews, risk assessments, and engineering best practices
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for optical systems, color science, and optoelectronic technologies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve product performance and reliability


Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with manufacturing, installation, service, procurement, and quality teams to improve product reliability and customer experience
  • Provide technical guidance to suppliers and support qualification of optical components and subsystems
  • Incorporate field feedback and lessons learned into future product designs


Documentation & Communication
  • Author technical reports, specifications, validation plans, and engineering documentation
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to engineering leadership and key stakeholders
  • Develop technical documentation to support manufacturing, installation, and service organizations


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Optoelectronics, Optical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, or a related discipline required
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a related field is considered an asset
  • 5-7 years of experience in product development, systems engineering, or research and development environments
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to model and predict the performance of complex systems
  • Deep understanding of optics, optoelectronics, imaging systems, and optical measurement techniques
  • Extensive laboratory experience using optical, electronic, and test equipment
  • Strong programming skills and experience with object-oriented software development
