Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Compliance Engineer - Safety in our Kansas City HQ location, our Cary, NC or Phoenix, AZ location. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring Garmin products meet applicable product safety requirements to support Garmin's global markets. This position works closely with product development teams to identify safety requirements early in the design process, evaluate potential hazards, perform pre-compliance testing, resolve technical issues, and support formal product safety certification.

Senior Compliance Engineers at Garmin work closely with electrical, mechanical, battery, power supply, manufacturing, quality, compliance, and other cross-functional engineering teams to help ensure products are designed to meet applicable safety standards.

Essential Functions
  • Develop applicable regulatory, certification and market access requirements for Garmin's products in development based on product architecture, technologies, and targeted markets.
  • Develop compliance plans that support product development schedules and global market access requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and product development activities as the compliance representative. Lead safety design review meetings.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee pre-compliance testing to identify safety or other compliance issues prior to formal certification.
  • Work with 3rd party test labs to execute Garmin's compliance strategies
  • Troubleshoot compliance failures and work with design teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Review test reports, technical documentation, Declarations of Conformity, homologation certificates, and other compliance deliverables for technical accuracy and completeness.
  • Effectively communicate complex regulatory and technical topics to engineering teams, project leadership, management, and partner labs.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert within the area of product safety compliance requirements.
  • Support Compliance leadership to develop, improve, and maintain compliance processes, procedures, and guidelines for the Compliance department.
  • Ability to contribute to regulatory and standards research on new technologies and global markets.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced Compliance Engineers.
  • Demonstrate Garmin's values and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience performing or supporting compliance testing.
  • Experience with product safety testing and country certifications or homologations
  • Experience troubleshooting compliance failures and working with product development teams to implement design solutions.
  • Ability to explain and document regulatory and standards requirements
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience performing product safety evaluations and certification testing for electronic or electromechanical products.
  • Experience with IEC, UL, CSA, EN, or other internationally recognized product safety standards. Desirable standards knowledge include IEC/EN 62368-1, EN 60335-1, or EN 50689.
  • Experience working directly with accredited laboratories, certification bodies, notified bodies, regulatory agencies, or similar external organizations.
  • iNARTE certification in Product Safety
  • Global market access activities
