CNC Machining and CAM Automation Engineer

This role is part of Advanced Manufacturing Group's (AMG) CNC Machining Automation team, supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of earth.

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will develop and deploy advanced machining processes, custom software applications, CNC machine automation, and CAM automation supporting CNC machining to drive delivery of Blue Origin rockets and systems. You will participate in the design, implementation, and deployment of pioneering systems and technologies to continuously improve the safety, quality and efficiency of our manufacturing processes.

We are looking for someone to apply their CNC machining, CAD/CAM/PLM, and software development expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to scale and improve automated manufacturing.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop, deploy, customize, and support software solutions to drive efficiency and automation in CNC programming and machining fabrication
  • Drive adoption and implementation of efficiency-increasing tools, including AI/ML, in-process probing, adaptive machining, closed-loop feedback processes, and cutting tool data management systems.
  • Develop and deploy CNC postprocessors and machine code simulation
  • Develop and/or support integrations and add-ons for CAD/CAM/PLM systems
  • Independently identify and evaluate advanced and emerging manufacturing technology
  • Work independently to identify, prioritize, and initiate automation solutions
  • Support strategic initiatives such as equipment and software selection
  • Provide direct hands-on support to machinists, CNC programmers, and manufacturing engineers in deploying new processes and technology
  • Collaborate with machinists, CNC programmers, manufacturing engineers, industrial engineers, automation engineers, and software engineers to develop and scale machining automation
  • Collaborate with CNC vendor applications engineers, maintenance technicians, IT networking, and automation engineers for holistic lifecycle support of CNC machines


Qualifications:
  • 7+ years in a CNC machining manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated success with CAM systems and CNC programming
  • Demonstrated success in software development and/or CNC postprocessor development and/or CAM software development and customization
  • Extensive experience with CNC controls such as Sinumerik, Heidenhain, Fanuc, or Okuma
  • Extensive understanding of G-code with demonstrated ability to write custom high-level cycles and subprograms ("macro programming"), especially for probing
  • Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions, and test procedures
  • Able to write high quality, efficient, and maintainable code in languages such as Python, and Typescript
  • Ability to work effectively with a strong work ethic and close attention to detail in a fast-paced dynamic team environment with rapidly changing roles and responsibilities
  • Extremely customer focused with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with teams of different skills across large geographic distances
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills and a proven ability to drive complex projects with minimal oversight
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum


Desired:
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering, computer science, or other scientific discipline from an accredited university
  • Experience with modern software development practices for source control, CI/CD, and cloud architecture
  • Experience with CAD/CAM/PLM environment administration and customization, especially Siemens NX and Teamcenter
  • Experience with CNC postprocessor development, especially for NX CAM
  • Experience developing automated machining cells
  • Experience with robotics
  • Experience with cutting tool databases such as TMS, TDM, or MRL


Must be physically able to:
  • Support manufacturing and fabrication floor activities.
  • Climb stairs and work in small areas.
  • Lift and carry 40 lbs.

Base Pay Range for:
WA applicants is $197,529.00 - $276,539.55
