JOB DESCRIPTION

What You'll Do

As Registered Nurse (RN), you will support the health, safety, and well-being of individuals participating in MVLE’s Group Day programs by ensuring comprehensive, preventative, and responsive nursing services. The RN provides clinical oversight, medication management, staff training, and health monitoring in accordance with Virginia DBHDS regulations, Medicaid Waiver requirements, CARF accreditation standards, nursing standards of practice, and MVLE policies.

You will work collaboratively with individuals, families, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Program Coordinators, Program Managers, Behavior Specialists, and external healthcare providers to promote wellness, independence, and safe community participation.

Your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Oversight & Health Management

  • Provide comprehensive and preventative nursing care for individuals enrolled in Group Day programs.
  • Conduct routine and as-needed health assessments and monitor ongoing medical conditions.
  • Collaborate with behavior and clinical teams regarding medication needs, health-related behavior supports, and required consents.

 

Medication Management

  • Oversee medication administration practices in Group Day programs in accordance with physician orders, regulations, and MVLE policy.
  • Administer medications as needed and supervise medication administration by trained staff.
  • Supervise and support staff authorized under applicable medication administration protocols (e.g., AMAP or Virginia-approved equivalents).
  • Conduct regular medication counts, including controlled substances, and address discrepancies.
  • Ensure medications are accurately labeled, securely stored, and disposed of properly.

 

Documentation, Compliance & Quality

  • Maintain accurate and timely nursing documentation in compliance with DBHDS regulations, Medicaid Waiver requirements, CARF Standards, and standards of nursing practice.
  • Review medical communication logs routinely for all individuals.
  • Conduct monthly audits of health-related documentation, including:
    • Medication Administration Records (MARs)
    • Seizure logs
    • Health monitoring records
    • Incident-related health documentation
  • Prepare reports and summaries as required for licensing, quality improvement, and internal review.

 

Training & Staff Support

  • Provide training and ongoing education to DSPs and program staff on:
    • Medication administration
    • Health monitoring
    • Infection control
    • First aid and emergency response
  • Serve as a clinical resource to program staff regarding health-related concerns and risk mitigation.
  • Assist with development and review of health-related policies and procedures.

 

Team Participation & Program Support

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and ISP planning, providing health-related input and recommendations.
  • Support intake and transition planning by reviewing medical histories and identifying health support needs.
  • Provide emergency nursing support or consultation as assigned.
  • Maintain adequate medical, first aid, and emergency supplies across assigned program locations.

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience, with experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities strongly preferred.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with 3+ years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills, including the ability to identify changes in health status and respond appropriately.
  • Effective medication management skills, including administration, supervision, reconciliation, and documentation.
  • Ability to train, coach, and support direct support staff on health-related practices, medication administration, and emergency procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to coordinate appointments, follow-ups, audits, and documentation across multiple individuals and program sites.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal, with individuals, families, staff, healthcare providers, and external partners.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and review health-related policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant documentation and reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with behavior specialists, program leadership, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to adapt nursing practices to non-clinical, community-based program settings.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute meaningfully to team meetings, intake processes, and service planning.
  • Ability to travel between program sites and respond to health needs across multiple locations.

 

Compensation & Benefits
