Job Summary:The Project Manager, Engineering is an exempt, office-based professional whose primary duty is the planning, management, and control of engineer-to-order (ETO) projects and roadmap-driven new product development (NPD) programs that directly affect Rogers Machinery's product portfolio, customer commitments, and business operations. The role functions as the business owner of project execution - setting scope, schedules, budgets, and priorities - rather than performing hands-on engineering, production, or assembly work.
Working under general direction from the Sr. Director of Engineering, the Project Manager exercises discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, including project scope and trade-offs, schedule and resource commitments, cross-functional priorities, and risk response. The incumbent compares and evaluates alternatives, makes decisions without immediate supervision, and makes recommendations to senior leadership that are given substantial weight. The position also designs, implements, and improves the company's project management workflows, processes, and standards for assemble-to-order, configure-to-order, and engineer-to-order business activities.
Essential Job Duties:- Plan and direct ETO and NPD projects from kickoff through production release and delivery, independently determining project scope, objectives, milestones, deliverables, and resource requirements for both customer order-driven and roadmap projects.
- Establish and own project schedules, critical paths, and baselines; decide how to sequence work and re-plan schedules when priorities, scope, or resources change.
- Evaluate project risks, resource constraints, and schedule impacts; select and implement mitigation strategies and determine when issues must be escalated to senior leadership.
- Direct the work of cross-functional project teams (engineering, operations, supply chain, quality, and sales) without direct reporting authority; assign project tasks, set deadlines, and hold team members accountable for project commitments.
- Make and recommend scope, schedule, and cost trade-off decisions; evaluate engineering change requests for project impact and approve or recommend disposition within established authority levels.
- Serve as Rogers' primary representative on project matters to internal stakeholders across sites and, as assigned, to customers and suppliers; negotiate delivery commitments and communicate project status and risk to Sales and leadership
- Analyze portfolio capacity and resource demand; recommend project prioritization, sequencing, and resource allocation to the Sr. Director of Engineering to support product roadmap and business objectives.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve project management policies, procedures, templates, and best practices for assemble-to-order, configure-to-order, and engineer-to-order business activities; interpret and apply these standards across projects.
- Lead project reviews, phase-gate and milestone reviews, and status meetings; determine whether projects are ready to advance and recommend go/no-go decisions to leadership.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, balancing competing priorities and making independent decisions on day-to-day execution.
Additional Job Duties:- Plan and oversee product launch readiness, determining readiness criteria and ensuring successful transition from development to production.
- Plan and schedule prototype builds, validation testing, commissioning activities, and production readiness reviews; track results and determine project impacts (hands-on build and test work is performed by engineering and production staff).
- Design and maintain project dashboards, portfolio reporting, action item registers, and executive status reports; analyze data to identify trends and recommend corrective actions for engineering development programs.
- Identify and recommend improvements to project management processes, tools, and metrics supporting engineering and new product development, and lead implementation of approved changes.
- Train and advise project teams and supporting departments on project management practices and standards.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve project planning, communication, reporting, and execution effectiveness.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Business, Project Management, Manufacturing, Operations, Engineering, or related field and 5+ years of relevant experience managing product development or technical projects.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams through engineered product development and release in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Skills:- Experience leading NPD projects and cross-functional teams developing rotating equipment (or similar capital equipment) in a configure-to-order, assemble-to-order, or engineer-to-order manufacturing environment.
- Experience coordinating projects across multiple locations or facilities.
- Proficiency with Smartsheet, Microsoft Project or equivalent PM software.
- Understanding of engineering deliverables, BOM structures, release processes, and engineering change management.
- Familiarity with ERP, PLM, and engineering document control systems.
- Comfortable in a fast paced, rapid change environment; multi-task projects.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with a focus on customer care.
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Physical Demands:- Work is primarily performed in an office environment, with periodic time on the production floor and at other Rogers sites to review project status.
