The Atlantic is seeking a skilled producer to join ourvideo podcast team. This person will help lead the production of Galaxy Brain with Charlie Warzel. We’re looking for somebody who is enthusiastic about exploring how the internet and technology shape our lives. We need a producer who can identify interesting ideas and the best people to talk about them; a journalist who can dive down interesting rabbit holes and come out with great episodes, in coordination with the host and team.
Responsibilities include:
Work with the host and supervising producer to maintain editorial excellence and shepherd ideas through the creative process by pitching show topics and guests, and acting as the point person for pre-interviews, booking, and tech set up
Oversee end-to-end production of the show, from pre- to post-production, including:
Work with host to hone ideas, structure episodes, and draft scripts;
Work to get the best tape and sound quality from the host and guest during tapings and ensure the interview covers all the necessary points;
Manage post production, applying incisive editorial judgment to deliver sharp first drafts on tight deadlines;
Cut rough drafts of episodes in Premiere, demonstrating knowledge of the tone and pacing necessary for a compelling watching and listening experience
Manage the show’s production calendar
Work with teams across The Atlantic, including legal, art, audience, copy desk, story editors, and fact checkers to ensure the highest-quality production standards
Coordinate and manage all recording sessions with proper setup of lighting, audio, and camera equipment to ensure a smooth recording experience
Ensure consistency in visual and audio quality across all episodes
Collaborate with audience team to create video clips for social media
Upload episodes to video and audio platforms
Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
Proven experience working in journalism
Proven experience in video production and editing (preferably in podcasting)
Proficiency in taping and editing softwares, like Adobe Premiere Pro, and Riverside for remote podcast recording
Strong understanding of lighting, audio, and camera operation for high-quality video production
Outstanding editorial judgment, and strong communication and collaboration skills
Demonstrated track record of producing high-quality work on ambitious deadlines and experience finding creative solutions to editorial problems
Creativity to push the show and the video podcast form forward, suggesting topics and formats and working with the team to implement fresh ideas
Familiarity with YouTube and podcast distribution platforms
Motion graphics and animation experience preferred
Ability to edit and enhance video content, adding graphics, transitions, and other elements to create a polished final product
Salary minimum: $85,000; Salary maximum: $135,000
This role is based in Washington D.C., but remote candidates may be considered.
This is a Guild position.
