Reporting to the AVP, Perioperative Services, you will plan, implement, and evaluate education and training programs that build and sustain clinical competency - designing the perioperative nursing program for new and transferring staff, supporting preceptors, and maintaining an active presence in the operating rooms to identify learning needs as they emerge. This is a role for an experienced perioperative nurse who wants to shape practice at scale, at a hospital where teaching is part of the mission.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Develop the Perioperative Nursing Program for newly hired and transferring-in staff; coordinate unit-level orientation programs alongside unit staff and assist preceptors with orientation needs.
  • Maintain an active presence in the operating rooms during surgical procedures to monitor nursing practice and identify learning needs.
  • Develop plans for educating perioperative staff on new protocols, in-services, and electronic medical record systems.
  • Ensure educational activities are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agency requirements, and institutional and divisional philosophy, policies, and objectives.
  • Serve as a clinical expert in the care and management of patients undergoing perioperative procedures, interfacing with nursing managers, clinical nursing staff, physicians, administrative staff, and patients and families.
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, HIPAA privacy requirements, and federal healthcare program requirements; complete all mandatory compliance training and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master's degree in Nursing or a related field.

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Knowledge and expertise in perioperative nursing practice and education sufficient to identify the educational needs of nursing staff.
  • Program development and management skills - assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities that meet the learning needs of nurses assigned to perioperative units.
  • Ability to design educational programs using educational theory, adult learning principles, and ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) guidelines for continuing nursing education program planning.
  • Knowledge of measurement and evaluation methodologies for determining educational outcomes and learner proficiency.
  • Effective oral and written communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including presentation and classroom delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
