Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer Senior/Energy Manager is responsible for managing and optimizing energy usage on campus. The main goal is to optimize energy utilization, increase energy efficiency, maintain the operational status of equipment/systems as designed, and lower energy costs. The energy manager will conduct energy audits, identify areas of inefficiency, develop and implement energy-saving initiatives, monitor energy usage and costs, assist with negotiating energy contracts, and educate staff on energy conservation and efficiency practices.

This position is designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during closings or emergency situations.

Required Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering.
  • Considerable skills in developing and preparing contract documents.
  • Thorough knowledge of communication protocols. Knowledge of Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to test, evaluate, implement, and troubleshoot networking hardware and software malfunctions in a complex, campus-wide telecommunications network.
  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical, pneumatic, and digital controls.
  • Highly familiar with Excel. Supervisory experience of technical mechanical trades personnel.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license.
  • Energy Manager Certification or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LEED and other sustainability tracking systems.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools to analyze, identify, and resolve telecommunications and control problems.
  • Extensive knowledge of Johnson Controls ADX (extended application and data server), Lutron Lighting Control System, and Automated Logic Corporation (WebCtrl software) for energy-saving strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of presentations and other report writing tools.
  • Knowledge of utility-grade power generation from non-utility sources.
