Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Position SummaryMechanical Engineer is responsible for supporting manufacturing capacity expansion through equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and line debug, with a focus on mechanical engineering & project management. This role partners with operations, maintenance, engineering teams, and vendors to deliver reliable equipment solutions and ensure a successful transition to production.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and/or support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and capacity expansion projects.
- Provide hands-on mechanical engineering support for line debug, equipment performance, and process improvement.
- Manage engineering activities to meet project milestones, schedules, and operational readiness goals.
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to resolve technical issues and support project scope, cost, and timing.
- Prepare equipment and processes for handoff to operations.
- Develop and update engineering, equipment, and operational documentation.
- Identify spare parts needs and support storeroom setup for new or modified equipment.
- Support training for operations and maintenance teams on equipment and process changes.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and process issues using data analysis, root cause problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Design and implement mechanical solutions to improve equipment capability, reliability, and efficiency.
- Maintain safe work practices and support compliance with site safety standards.
Work Hours, Location and Travel Requirements- 40+ hours/week
- Location: Newton, North Carolina
- Travel: 10-20%
Experiences/Education - Required- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent technical field.
- 3+ years of experience with equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and project management.
- Project leadership or project management experience.
- Strong mechanical engineering, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- AutoCAD experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Experiences/Education - Desired- Experience working with equipment vendors and suppliers.
- Knowledge of manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems integration.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently.
- Inventor / SolidWorks experience
- Collaborative and team-oriented
This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $83,134.00 - $114,310.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
