Legal Counsel RoleAs a key member of the legal team, the successful candidate will provide timely legal advice on a broad range of legal issues in support of business operations and will report directly to the General Counsel.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide strategic legal advice to business units on the application of relevant laws, regulations, and company policies
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements
- Manage product safety and regulatory matters, including regulatory filings
- Manage legal compliance matters, including developing and deploying compliance programs, policies, training, and guidance documents
- Monitor and report on internal compliance activities
- Assist with Canadian privacy law compliance, including providing legal support for privacy impact assessments and responses to information requests
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments and advise business units on compliance and emerging risks impacting the business
- Support the development, management, and revision of internal policies and procedures
- Assist General Counsel as needed
- Additional duties as required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- LL.B./J.D. and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- A minimum of five years of relevant work experience as in-house counsel, in a law firm or a combination of both
- Strong knowledge and experience with corporate/commercial matters
- Strong technical skills and sound business judgment
- Strong drafting, negotiation, time-management, and communication skills
- An ability to work independently, handling complex matters from beginning to end with minimal supervision
- An ability to build collaborative relationships and work cross-functionally with legal and business partners
- An ability to provide concise, practical legal advice, while explaining complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
- Experience advising on privacy and data governance matters is considered an asset, as is prior experience working with government agencies and/or regulators
Note: This posting is for an existing vacancy. The expected base salary range for this position is $170,000 - $190,000. Actual total compensation may include variable incentive pay. The determination of an applicant's base salary is based on the applicant's skills, competencies, location and unique qualifications.
