Full Job Description
Summary:
The Director of IT will serve as SpyGlass Pharma's first dedicated in-house IT leader - a hands-on builder who also brings the experience to know what good looks like. This role owns IT strategy, systems administration, and infrastructure across SpyGlass's Microsoft 365-based environment and directs our managed IT and security services provider (MSP/MSSP), responsible for IT service delivery and security operations and partners closely with our fractional CISO, who owns cybersecurity strategy, AI governance, and third-party security risk. The ideal candidate will operate independently as an individual contributor initially, while leveraging the services and skills of our Managed Service Provider (MSP). Eventually, this individual will be a key contributor to the strategy for building out SpyGlass' IT infrastructure as the company scales.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the design, implementation, and administration of SpyGlass Pharma's IT infrastructure, including its Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, networking, and cloud environment.
Own the full lifecycle of enterprise IT systems - configuration, security, maintenance, monitoring, and upgrades - across platforms including Egnyte (file storage), NetSuite (ERP), MasterControl (QMS), Bamboo (HRIS & ATS), and Veeva Vault and iMednet/Medrio (clinical systems).
Direct and manage SpyGlass's outsourced IT and help desk provider, including SLAs, escalation, and an ongoing evaluation of what should remain outsourced versus move in-house as the company scales.
Partner with SpyGlass's fractional CISO to operationalize cybersecurity, AI governance, and access-control policy - the CISO sets policy and risk direction; this role builds and runs the systems that implement it.
Develop and implement IT policies, standard operating procedures, and governance frameworks that scale with the company from approximately 90 to 300-500 employees, including support for new office locations.
Oversee all aspects of system backup and disaster recovery planning, execution, and testing.
Collaborate with business functions - including Quality, Clinical, Commercial, Finance, and HR - to assess IT needs, implement solutions, and support strategic projects across the organization.
Manage user access, system provisioning, and secure integrations across key business platforms, and build scalable onboarding/offboarding and device-lifecycle processes that don't require linear headcount growth in IT.
Serve as a trusted advisor for IT project management and cross-functional support-ensuring clear documentation, timeline management, and issue resolution.
Lead vendor evaluations and manage third-party partnerships related to hardware, software, and IT services, and evaluate and implement new tools and platforms as SpyGlass adds functions and headcount.
Build the business case for, and hire, SpyGlass's first internal IT support/systems team member within the first year, then mentor and guide the team as it grows.
Ensure regulatory compliance in IT systems operations, including alignment with 21 CFR Part 11, other relevant GxP requirements, and SOX IT general controls, where applicable.
Provide exceptional support and training to end users, maintaining a team-first, service-oriented approach.
Qualifications Required For Position:
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline preferred; an equivalent combination of professional experience, military technical training, and industry certifications will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive IT systems experience, including experience operating as a hands-on individual contributor as well as in a leadership capacity.
Required: prior IT experience within a life sciences, pharma, biotech, or other GxP-regulated company, with working knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP 5, and computer system validation.
Experience supporting SOX IT General Controls (ITGCs), including access reviews, change management, and segregation-of-duties controls, preferred.
Experience scaling an IT function through a significant headcount inflection point (e.g., helped take a company from roughly 100 to 400+ employees).
Deep, hands-on experience administering Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, and Conditional Access, along with experience managing an outsourced MSP or IT vendor relationship, including SLA management and vendor governance.
Comfort operating as SpyGlass's sole IT leader initially - hands-on and strategic simultaneously - with the ability to build the case for and onboard the company's first internal IT hire within year one. Exposure to clinical, quality, or ERP systems (e.g., Veeva, MasterControl, NetSuite, or similar) is a strong plus.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
