Job DescriptionThe Director of the Student Counseling Center provides executive, clinical, and administrative leadership for the university's student mental health services. This 12-month, in-person role oversees clinical operations, strategic planning, budgeting, team supervision, crisis response, and the practicum training program. The Director serves as the primary campus point-of-contact and expert on student mental health, advocating for student wellness and building collaborative partnerships across the university and the broader community.
REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:- Education: Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Licensed as a Psychologist with Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) endorsement in Indiana.
- Experience:
- Progressive leadership and supervisory experience in a university counseling center or multi-disciplinary clinical setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and emergency management.
- Experience providing clinical supervision to doctoral-level psychology trainees.
- Competencies: Strong administrative, budgetary, and analytical skills; commitment to ethical standards and student well-being; exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Supervision of full-time and part-time staff in the Student Counseling Center, including the graduate interns.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Executive Leadership & Operations
- Oversee all clinical, administrative, financial, and day-to-day operations of the Student Counseling Center.
- Develop, implement, and monitor departmental policies, clinical procedures, and budget allocation to maximize operational efficiency and service quality.
- Collect, compile, and analyze clinical utilization data, outcomes, and trends to inform service adjustments, strategy, and administrative reporting.
- Oversee the design and dissemination of all departmental marketing, promotional materials, and outreach initiatives.
- Maintain awareness of current research, clinical best practices, and ethical/legal protocols established by the American Psychological Association (APA) and state licensing boards.
Clinical Supervision & Training Management
- Provide direct supervision, performance evaluations, and mentorship for all counseling center staff.
- Secure professional development resources, advocate for staff growth, and lead regular staff enrichment programs and retreats.
- Direct the Student Counseling Center's Practicum Training Program in partnership with the Clinical Psychology Doctoral program. Meet regularly (at least monthly) with the Director of Clinical Training - Practicum to coordinate trainee schedules, review clinical supervision standards, and ensure seamless program alignment.
- Ensure Staff Psychologists/HSPP supervisors provide high-quality supervision, didactics, and mentoring to doctoral trainees.
- Serve on Training and Didactic program committees as needed.
Clinical Service & Crisis Management
- When necessary, deliver direct clinical services, including individual, group, and couples therapy, comprehensive mental health assessments, and specialized alcohol and drug evaluations for policy violations.
- Provide immediate crisis intervention for acute student presentations (e.g., severe suicidality, homicidal ideation, psychosis, substance intoxication, sexual assault, and severe trauma).
- Chair the University Crisis Response Team (CRT); direct CRT initiatives, lead emergency meetings, and coordinate campus-wide outreach during acute events.
- Provide outreach and support to regional colleges, universities, or local agencies during major external emergency events.
- Serve in an "on-call" rotation during evenings and weekends to consult with Campus Police, Residence Life, and University Administration on emergency matters.
Campus Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary campus point-of-contact and strategic resource for student mental health, consulting across academic and administrative disciplines to support total student care.
- Lead proactive mental health outreach and prevention efforts across the university community. Partner with academic and administrative departments to offer faculty/staff training (e.g., QPR, Mental Health First Aid) that build community capacity for early identification, crisis intervention, and student support.
- Collaborate closely with Health Services (nurse practitioners and office physicians) on integrated medical and psychological care plans.
- Partner with Residence Life to design and deliver mental health in-service training for Residence Life staff.
- Maintain collaborative liaison relationships with Campus Police, Residence Life, and the Vice President for Student Affairs and Student Success.
- Serve on university-wide committees as requested.
