Americas Risk Department

The Americas Risk Department, as a 2nd line of defense organization, provides common risk management oversight and services to all businesses and legal entities across Mizuho U.S. Operations (MUSO). Effectively and efficiently managing risk on a consistent and holistic basis across all our businesses is critical to Mizuho's success in the Americas as well as meeting regulatory expectations and requirements.

The Non-Financial Risk (NFR) Role

NFR is seeking an experienced Director to serve as the primary Non-Financial Risk Coverage Officer for the Banking businesses. The role will provide independent oversight, effective challenge, and strategic risk advisory support to senior business leaders across Corporate Banking, Commercial Banking, Treasury, Lending, and related support functions while promoting a strong risk culture and ensuring alignment with the firm's risk appetite, regulatory expectations, and risk management objectives.

The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of Banking businesses, products, client lifecycle activities, operating models and control environments, coupled with expertise in non-financial risk management and governance.

Principal Duties may entail all or some of the following responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary 2LoD Non-Financial Risk coverage lead for the Banking businesses, providing independent oversight, effective challenge, and strategic advisory support to senior business leaders, Business COOs, and control functions.
  • Promote a strong risk culture across Banking activities by ensuring non-financial risks are identified, assessed, managed, monitored, and reported in alignment with the Firm's risk appetite, regulatory expectations, and risk management objectives.
  • Partner with business management and control functions to assess the risk implications of business growth, new products, strategic initiatives, organizational changes, and business change initiatives.
  • Provide effective challenge over non-financial risks arising from Banking activities, including client onboarding, lending and credit administration processes, treasury activities, transaction processing, operational resiliency, technology dependencies, data quality, third-party relationships, and related control environments.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of risk management practices, controls, issue remediation, and risk event responses, ensuring material control gaps are identified, escalated, and remediated in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and present risk assessments, emerging risk insights, trends, and governance materials for senior management committees, risk forums, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with NFR team members to enhance KRIs, KPIs, analytics, risk management practices, and new risk initiatives that support the evolving regulatory environment and strengthen the overall NFR framework.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree.
  • 10 years of risk management, compliance, audit, or relevant Banking control function experience within the financial industry.
  • Preferred qualifications include commercial experience in relationship management or portfolio banking, capital markets trading, trade support, or middle-office transformation.
  • Strong understanding of Banking businesses, including Corporate Banking, Commercial Banking, Treasury, Lending, Deposits, Cash Management, and related operating models.
  • Experience supporting or overseeing Banking activities within a commercial bank, corporate bank, treasury organization, business risk and control's function, compliance function, internal audit function, or risk management organization.
  • Understanding of key non-financial risks within Banking businesses, including operational risk, technology risk, data risk, third-party risk, legal risk, fraud risk, conduct risk, and regulatory compliance risk.
  • Knowledge of end-to-end Banking processes, including client onboarding, lending lifecycle activities, treasury operations, transaction processing, servicing, and supporting operational infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of NFR framework elements (RCSA, Risk Events, Issues, KRIs, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive risk management outcomes across complex organizations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed individual with the ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to Banking organizations.
  • Collaborative team player and relationship builder.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel.


The expected base salary ranges from $165,000 - $235,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, including Medical, Dental and 401K plans, successful candidates are also eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
