Full Job Description
The Opportunity

This role exists to bring strategic, technical, and people leadership, and an AI-first operating model, to Marble's engineering organization, so the platform scales reliably and compliantly across Medchart and SettLiT.

We need a leader who owns technical strategy and architecture, instills the operating discipline that turns a growing team into a reliable delivery engine, invests in the engineers we already have, and, critically, leads the AI-first transformation that will define how we build for the next decade.

This is a player-coach executive role. You'll set direction and you'll be in the room for the hard technical calls. You'll design the future of the engineering org, and you'll spend real time coaching the engineers we already have. You'll report directly to the CEO and sit on the Senior Leadership Team, partnering closely with Product, Operations, Sales, and Data Partnerships.

What you'll own in your first year

  • Technical strategy & architecture. Set and socialize a clear technical strategy and architectural-ownership model spanning Medchart and SettLiT (~6 months).
  • Delivery discipline. Install engineering operating rhythms: planning, estimation, code-review standards, release and incident management, so delivery becomes predictable (~6 months).
  • AI-first operating model. Stand up the norms, guardrails, and playbooks that make AI a core part of how we build, ship, and operate, with measurable adoption and productivity impact (~9-12 months).
  • Team design. Define the future engineering org structure and hiring plan; raise the technical bar and clarify career paths for senior and intermediate engineers (~9 months).
  • Quality & compliance. Raise quality-assurance standards across development and data-source implementations, with disciplined release gates that reduce production surprises, and keep our regulated, consent-driven workflows audit-ready as customers, data volumes, and integrations grow.

What you bring

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including significant time leading engineering teams, most likely as a VP, Director, or Head of Engineering. We care more about demonstrated capability leading through scale than raw tenure.
  • Deep technical and architectural ability. You're comfortable leading architecture reviews, challenging technical assumptions, and coaching a team in a cloud-native, regulated environment. We're an Azure shop, so comfort operating in and around the Azure ecosystem matters; you don't need to be the deepest expert in every service.
  • A track record of embedding AI into engineering, with a clear point of view on what "AI-first engineering" actually means, beyond individual productivity tools.
  • Structure without bureaucracy. Evidence you've brought discipline to a lean team without slowing it down. You know the difference between the process that makes a startup faster and the process that makes it slower.
  • Executive-level cross-functional partnership and clear communication with technical, product, commercial, and executive audiences.

Bonus points

  • HealthTech, Health Data, LegalTech, InsurTech, FinTech, or another regulated-industry background.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, PHIPA, SOC 2, and consent/authorization frameworks; health data interoperability standards including FHIR, CCDA, claims, pharmacy, and EHR.
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations through growth stages and leading distributed teams.
  • Hands-on with Azure OpenAI, GitHub Copilot, and AI evaluation frameworks covering accuracy, reliability, explainability, and human review.
  • API, data infrastructure, platform-product, or data-orchestration experience.

Where you'll work

Hybrid work, Greater Toronto Area preferred, with regular time at our downtown Toronto office.

How we work

Our three values shape how this role shows up:
  • Hungry. Startup urgency. You proactively drive the AI-first change rather than waiting for permission, and you ship despite ambiguity.
  • Humble. Player-coach. You coach and unblock without taking over, credit the team, invite dissent, and are comfortable saying "I don't know yet."
  • Care. You invest in the engineers you lead, and you protect security, privacy, and customer trust in every decision.

Note: Successful candidates will be asked to undergo a background check.

Existing Vacancy Disclosure: This posting is for an existing vacancy.
