ViiV Healthcare (GSK) Senior Director, Early Development Leader

The Senior Director, Early Development Leader is responsible for leading a global multidisciplinary development team within R&D to deliver on all aspects of early drug development (Candidate Selection through completion of POC and all activities sufficient to allow initiation of Phase 2b) to agreed timelines.

This role will be based out of Durham, NC or PA Locations (UP, FMC, and/or UM) or Branford, CT or Waltham, MA or Cambridge, MA & is eligible for domestic relocation package. The role can also be based at our GSK HQ in London, UK.

• Leads the multi-functional global Early Development Team (EDT) responsible for delivery of an asset to Phase 2b
• Proactively direct medicine development strategy and plans for products from Candidate Selection through Proof of Concept/Commit to Medicine Development
• Contributes to the development of the regional and global strategy for products
• Interface with Senior Management, internal key stakeholders and external stakeholders to articulate and drive the Medicine Development Strategy
• Interface with other key functions during the development program such as Commercial to ensure alignment on strategy and project delivery timelines
• Manages prioritisation of asset’s development options to effectively manage the budget
• Utilizes organizational channels, experience and influencing skills to facilitate successful project progression and effective issue resolution
• Accountable for the creation and maintenance of a clear and detailed medicine development strategy. Is the focal point for the early development activities of an asset throughout the organization.
• Accountable for the creation of an integrated asset development plan through leadership of the EDT on a multi-disciplinary and global level
• Accountable for creation and maintenance of overall project budget.
• Responsible for representing the EDT at milestone and other key internal reviews at governance boards within ViiV such as VLT, RDGM LT, VSLC and within GSK as appropriate.
• Responsible for influencing integrated multi-disciplinary project activities at a variety of levels, including technical, operational and strategic

• MSc & 10 plus years of drug development experience
• Experience in establishing and executing a drug development strategy
• Experience in presenting scientific data to internal key stakeholders and external audiences

Preferred Qualifications

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

• Physician (MD or DO), PhD, or PharmD with clinical fellowship OR research experience in Infectious Diseases
• 10 plus years of drug development, including deep expertise in Oral Drug Development
• Effective communication skills
• Good interpersonal relationship building/maintenance
• Expertise in early development experience (Phase1 to Phase 2a) is a consideration for the optimal candidate
• Experience in HIV drug development
• Excellent leadership experience in a matrix environment
• Understanding of pharmaceutical job development

• If you are based in Cambridge, MA; Waltham, MA; Rockville, MD; or San Francisco, CA, the annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges $242,550 to $404,250. The US salary ranges take into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate’s skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
