Position Details:

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (ESFCOM) at Washington State University is seeking a Vice Chair for Emergency Medicine. As the Vice Chair for Emergency Medicine, you will report to the Chair of the Department of Medical Education & Clinical Sciences (DMECS) and serve as the college's thought leader for the development, design, coordination, and implementation of the Emergency Medicine curriculum.

You will foster a positive and inclusive academic environment for learners and faculty, assure comparability of educational experiences and learner assessment across campuses, and collaborate with college leadership and stakeholders to integrate Emergency Medicine across medical education, clinical practice, and scholarship and to create clinical education experiences that add significant value to learning and competency.

The position allows flexibility to accommodate the incumbent's clinical activities with a mutually agreed upon FTE with a negotiable range of .6 - 1.0 FTE. You will hold a 12-month, full-time, continuous career track (subtrack determined at time of hire) position in the Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences with an academic rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor commensurate with qualifications. This position may be based at any of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine Clinical Campuses in WA State such as Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver or Everett.

Essential Functions

Educator Role | 40%

Integrate the curricular and assessment framework for Emergency Medicine vertically and horizontally across the four years of the MD Program, in partnership with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (ADUME) including:
  • Developing learning objectives, activities, and assessment methodologies that meet MD Program outcomes, with appropriate spiraling of content and alignment with developmental milestones.
  • Advising students who are having difficulty achieving expected learning outcomes and working with faculty on targeted skills development and remediation plans.
  • Holding primary responsibility for the fourth-year core Emergency Medicine course, including didactic and clinical curriculum design, development, approval, assessment, standardization, and implementation.
  • Designing and approving elective experiences, leading or co-leading courses as required, and teaching across all four years of the curriculum.
  • Monitoring course and program evaluations and aggregate student performance with the Curriculum Committee and its subcommittees.
  • Reviewing and finalizing outward-facing educational materials for learners and faculty in the discipline.


Assure quality and comparability at every campus, in partnership with the Regional Associate Deans (RAD) and ADUME, including:
  • Monitoring and supervising curriculum delivery, educational quality, and learner outcomes across campuses, learning environments, and affiliate sites.
  • Leading specialty-specific orientation and faculty development for teaching faculty and preceptors, including CME opportunities, in coordination with the ADFD and other Vice Chairs.
  • Supporting teaching quality improvement and ensuring compliance with educational accreditation standards.


DMECS Leadership | 35%

Support the development and direction of Emergency Medicine graduate medical education programs, in partnership with the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (ADGME)

Support Emergency Medicine faculty and others in an assigned portfolio, including:
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding faculty across all campuses and affiliate sites, and supporting faculty retention and succession planning.
  • Recruiting, developing, and supporting Emergency Medicine clinical practice partner groups.
  • Formulating, supporting, and moderating faculty enhancement and remediation when consulted.
  • Conducting annual faculty performance evaluations and mid-year check-ins, including review of academic productivity and professional development goals.
  • Mentoring and coaching faculty, establishing individualized academic development plans, and guiding career planning, navigation of departmental structure, promotion and tenure pathways, and dossier preparation.
  • Addressing faculty concerns and facilitating problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Serving as the primary communication link between departmental leadership and faculty, including meeting with faculty individually and in groups at least quarterly, communicating departmental goals and changes, facilitating feedback, and monitoring morale and engagement.


Support the research agenda of the college in Emergency Medicine and medical education, including:
  • Using a scholarly, evidence-based approach to teaching and learning and staying abreast of medical education trends and best practices in the specialty.
  • Developing and implementing research related to the discipline.
  • Supporting and directing research, publications, presentations, and educational scholarship for faculty and Emergency Medicine-bound students, including student scholarly projects and promotion-related scholarly activities.


Provide departmental leadership and strategic direction in partnership with the DMECS Chair, including:
  • Participating in departmental leadership meetings and assisting the Chair with strategic planning, policy development, and operational decision-making.
  • Participating in leadership initiatives across affiliated health systems.
  • Identifying opportunities for departmental growth, developing new programs and services, leading special projects, and developing business cases and resource requests.
  • Supporting the faculty practice plan, including innovative integration with medical education.
  • Supporting quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives, including review of performance and operational metrics and collaboration with departmental and organizational quality leaders.


Demonstrate service and citizenship to the department, college, university, state, and professional organizations, including:
  • Serving as the external face of and content expert for Emergency Medicine for the college and university.
  • Representing the specialty, department, and college on departmental, medical staff, hospital, university, and cross-disciplinary committees, workgroups, and task forces, and leading projects as assigned.
  • Modeling professionalism and leadership, fostering diversity, inclusion, and inter-professionalism, and promoting a positive work and learning environment in all academic and clinical settings.
  • Building strong relationships with COM stakeholders and partnering with the development director to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Traveling to the COM's campuses and faculty practices throughout the state as needed to support comparability, relationships, faculty development, and recruitment.


Student Support | 20%

Support student success through Emergency Medicine career advising, in partnership with the Office of Student Experience including:
  • Advising Emergency Medicine-interested students throughout all four years and guiding MS4 students through residency applications and away rotations.
  • Completing Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs) for all Emergency Medicine-interested students.
  • Assisting non-matching students through SOAP and the Scramble.
  • Maintaining relationships with Emergency Medicine residency programs in the Pacific Northwest and nationally, and participating in Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) activities related to undergraduate Emergency Medicine education and the Match.


Non-Essential Functions | 5%
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed.

This is a full-time, continuous career track position. This position is overtime exempt.

Annual Salary: The base salary range is commensurate with qualifications, track and rank determination. Compensation at 100% FTE is as follows:
  • Assistant Rank: $222,900 - $232,900 | Commensurate with qualifications
  • Associate Rank: $245,190 - $255,190 | Commensurate with qualifications
  • Full Professor Rank: $269,709 - $279,709 | Commensurate with qualifications


While serving as Vice Chair, this position will be eligible for an administrative stipend of $30,000. to be renewed annually.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.

Required Qualifications for all Candidates:
  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent degree with Board Certification in Emergency Medicine through ABEM.
  • Three or more years of clinical patient care experience in their specialty.
  • Three or more years of experience teaching, developing, evaluating or leading educational programs at the undergraduate or graduate medical education level.


Required Qualifications for Candidates at Associate Rank:
  • Current or previous appointment at the Associate rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for associate rank.


Additional Required Qualifications for Candidates at Full Professor Rank:
  • Current or previous appointment at the full professor rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent.
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship, and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for full professor rank.


Preferred Qualifications for all Candidates:
  • Experience developing medical school clinical courses.
  • Experience leading or managing professionals in a complex organization.
  • Proven experience in management of multiple initiatives and multiple sites.
  • Academic faculty status at allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
  • Experience with LCME and/or other accrediting bodies.
  • Experience working with diverse students or diverse populations, especially in rural and under-served areas.
