Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Switch Technician to support telecommunications systems, digital switching platforms, and mission-critical network infrastructure in San Diego, CA. This position requires a highly skilled technician with strong experience in telecommunications systems engineering, Avaya switching systems, Ethernet networks, VLANs, fiber optic infrastructure, and federal/military communications environments.

The ideal candidate must be able to independently install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair telecommunications equipment, including digital switching systems, routers, switches, servers, endpoints, PBX systems, and related peripheral equipment. This role requires strong technical judgment, detailed documentation, and the ability to communicate daily job status with the COR.

Avaya Certification / Experience Requirements

Strong emphasis should be placed on Avaya experience and certifications. The preferred candidate should have:
  • Certified Avaya Technician credentials
  • Experience performing Avaya installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance
  • Experience in maintaining Avaya telecommunications systems and associated peripheral equipment
  • Ability to analyze routine Avaya equipment issues and complete field corrections
  • Experience interfacing with customers and providing technical assistance
  • Ability to instruct customers on proper equipment operations and basic maintenance procedures
  • Ability to complete accurate service reports
  • Avaya Communication Manager certification/training
  • Advanced Administration Training certification
  • Avaya Aura familiarity or training preferred

Key Responsibilities

Telecommunications System Design and Implementation
  • Design and develop telecommunications solutions to meet client requirements
  • Support Ethernet and fiber optic network implementation
  • Oversee installation, configuration, and testing of telecommunications systems and equipment
  • Perform difficult and complex software and hardware installations
  • Conduct site surveys, system upgrades, moves, additions, and preventative/remedial maintenance

Switching Systems and Infrastructure Support
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot routers, switches, servers, endpoints, PBX systems, and digital switching systems
  • Maintain Avaya and other telecommunications platforms and associated hardware
  • Monitor and respond to complex technical control facility hardware and software issues
  • Interface with vendor support groups to ensure proper escalation during outages or degraded system performance

Network Performance and Optimization
  • Monitor and evaluate network performance for compliance with operational standards
  • Optimize bandwidth, reduce latency, and improve system reliability
  • Configure and monitor communication paths including radio, satellite, LAN/WAN, copper, and fiber

Technical Troubleshooting
  • Diagnose and resolve complex telecommunications issues, including connectivity problems, hardware failures, network interface issues, interoperability concerns, and system faults
  • Provide technical guidance to support teams
  • Respond quickly to outages, vulnerabilities, and indicators of compromise

Security and Access Control
  • Manage network rights, IP addresses, and role-based access controls
  • Apply patches, run security scans, and close vulnerabilities in a timely manner
  • Support cybersecurity readiness and maintain secure handling of sensitive communications traffic

Documentation and Compliance
  • Develop and maintain network diagrams, system configurations, test plans, service reports, logs, inventories, and technical documentation
  • Maintain documentation for audits and inspections
  • Ensure telecommunications solutions comply with federal, military, industry, and contract-specific requirements
  • Update CAIRS upon completion of task orders or maintenance activities
  • CAIRS updates may include binding posts, ports, cable pairs, building and room numbers, adding/removing circuit packs, and OSP records

Customer and Stakeholder Support
  • Work closely with project managers, technicians, government representatives, and the COR
  • Provide daily job status updates to the COR
  • Serve as a technical advisor to project teams
  • Support system upgrades, new technologies, and client expectations
  • Interface directly with customers and provide clear technical assistance

Required Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Active Secret Security Clearance
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in telecommunications systems engineering, design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with government or military telecommunications standards and practices
  • OEM-trained or certified on telecommunications network systems equipment
  • Demonstrated experience independently performing operation, installation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of digital switching systems
  • Experience supporting high-capacity circuits ranging from T1 to 100Gbps over copper and fiber mediums
  • Experience with Ethernet networks, VLAN configuration, fiber optic systems, LAN/WAN environments, and telecommunications infrastructure
  • Ability to support cybersecurity readiness, patching, security scans, vulnerability remediation, and protection of sensitive traffic

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting DoD, Navy, Marine Corps, DISA, or other federal telecommunications environments
  • Avaya Aura experience or formal training
  • Experience with CAIRS or similar telecommunications record management systems
  • Strong understanding of PBX systems, digital switching systems, copper/fiber infrastructure, and OSP records
  • Experience with both preventative and remedial maintenance in secure or mission-critical environments
