Role Summary:

Leads the US casualty reinsurance portfolio with accountability for underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, client and broker relationships, and profitable growth. The role is responsible for evaluating and structuring complex treaty opportunities, guiding underwriting discipline, influencing market strategy, and partnering with actuarial, claims, legal, and finance colleagues to deliver sustainable returns across the underwriting cycle.

Core Accountabilities:

  • Develop and execute the underwriting and business plan for the US casualty reinsurance portfolio, aligned with overall risk appetite, capital objectives, and financial targets.
  • Underwrite and oversee a portfolio of complex casualty treaty business, including evaluation of cedant performance, exposure trends, pricing adequacy, attachment points, limits, and contract structure.
  • Drive portfolio profitability through disciplined risk selection, cycle management, renewal strategy, accumulation oversight, and proactive remediation of underperforming segments.
  • Lead negotiations with brokers and clients on treaty terms, pricing, wording, and structure while maintaining strong long-term market relationships.
  • Partner closely with actuarial, claims, finance, legal, and catastrophe or exposure management teams to support pricing, reserving insight, wording consistency, and portfolio analytics.
  • Monitor market developments, casualty loss trends, social inflation, legal environment changes, and regulatory developments to inform underwriting strategy and portfolio actions.
  • Own portfolio reporting and communicate performance, opportunities, and risk issues to senior management through clear financial and strategic analysis.
  • Contribute to new business development by identifying attractive market opportunities, expanding broker and cedant relationships, and supporting cross-sell opportunities across the broader organization.
  • Lead, coach, and develop underwriting talent, reinforcing strong underwriting discipline, collaboration, and accountability across the team.


Qualifications:

Technical Competencies:
  • Deep expertise in US casualty reinsurance, including general liability, umbrella/excess, workers' compensation, professional lines, and other casualty treaty structures.
  • Strong underwriting judgment with the ability to assess cedant quality, portfolio dynamics, loss drivers, and pricing adequacy across complex submissions.
  • Advanced financial and actuarial acumen, including understanding of loss trends, reserving considerations, profitability metrics, and portfolio performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating treaty terms, wordings, structures, and pricing with brokers and cedants.
  • Strong portfolio management capability, including monitoring accumulations, volatility, concentration risk, and performance against plan.
  • Working knowledge of the US casualty legal and regulatory environment and the impact of emerging risks on underwriting strategy.
  • Proficiency with underwriting, analytics, and reporting tools, including Microsoft Office products and data visualization platforms.

Professional Experience:
  • 10-15+ years of progressively responsible experience in reinsurance or specialty insurance, with significant US casualty underwriting expertise and a demonstrated track record of profitable portfolio management.
  • Prior leadership experience managing teams, broker and client relationships, and portfolio performance is required.


Education & Professional Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in business, finance, economics, risk management, or a related field.
  • Advanced degree and relevant professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or equivalent are preferred.
