Overview

The Store Manager in Training (SMIT) program is designed for experienced retail leaders who are ready to take the next step in their leadership journey. This role provides a structured development experience focused on building the skills, business acumen, and leadership capabilities needed to successfully lead an REI store.

As a SMIT, you'll partner closely with Store Managers and Regional Directors, gain exposure to multiple store environments, and develop the expertise needed to lead teams, deliver exceptional customer experiences, and drive business results.

What You'll Do

Develop as a Future Store Manager
  • Participate in a comprehensive leadership development program designed to prepare you for Store Manager responsibilities.
  • Learn and demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of store operations, people leadership, and business management.
  • Actively seek feedback, coaching, and learning opportunities to accelerate your growth.

Lead and Inspire Teams
  • Foster an engaging, inclusive, and welcoming environment for employees and customers.
  • Coach, develop, and motivate teams to achieve performance goals while delivering exceptional service.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, development, and succession planning efforts.

Drive Operational Excellence
  • Learn to oversee all aspects of store operations, including staffing, scheduling, inventory, safety, and facilities.
  • Support execution of company initiatives, operational standards, and business priorities.
  • Utilize business metrics and trends to identify opportunities and improve performance.

Build Community Connections
  • Represent REI in local communities and help build relationships that support business growth and outdoor access.
  • Champion REI's values and commitment to creating positive impact inside and outside the store.

Prepare for Store Leadership

As development progresses, you'll gain hands-on experience performing Store Manager responsibilities and may serve in an acting leadership capacity when needed.
