Various Levels: Group Underwriting, Stop Loss

Voya’s Employee Benefits division is seeking Stop Loss Underwriters to evaluate employer group medical stop loss submissions and support underwriting decisions for both new business and renewal opportunities. This role analyzes risk and pricing factors, including group demographics, claim experience, large claimant activity, participation, plan design, contract terms, funding arrangements, and overall profitability, while ensuring proposed stop loss coverage aligns with underwriting guidelines and can be effectively administered. The underwriter partners with internal teams, field personnel, brokers, and clients to gather information, communicate decisions, and support competitive, financially sound solutions across the stop loss book of business. Successful candidates bring strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and clear communication skills, with responsibilities and approval authority increasing by level.

Key level differences:

  • Associate Group Underwriter: Entry-level underwriting role working under direct supervision on basic group insurance applications; approval authority up to 1,000 lives; typically requires 0–2 years of underwriting experience.
  • Senior Group Underwriter: Independently underwrites more difficult and complex group insurance applications; approval authority up to 5,000 lives; typically requires 3–4 years of group underwriting or voluntary benefits experience; may provide training and guidance to lower-level underwriters.
  • Lead Group Underwriter: Independently underwrites the most complex cases and provides broader guidance, work direction, training, and quality/performance input; approval authority up to 10,000 lives; typically requires 5–8 years of underwriting experience, with supplemental health experience preferred.

Compensation Pay Disclosure:

Voya is committed to pay that’s fair and equitable, which means comparable pay for comparable roles and responsibilities.

The below annual base salary range reflects the expected hiring range(s) for this position in the location(s) listed. In addition to base salary, Voya offers incentive opportunities (i.e., annual cash incentives, sales incentives, and/or long-term incentives) based on the role to reward the achievement of annual performance objectives. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Voya Financial is willing to pay at the time of this posting.

Actual compensation offered may vary from the posted salary range based upon the candidate’s geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
