Full Job Description
Staff Structural Engineer to own and advance structural engineering as a product development discipline - translating deep structural expertise into the requirements, rulesets, and technical resources that make ICON's building products & systems designable, verifiable, and executable at scale. This role serves as ICON's primary structural product development authority - develop the structural engineering logic into the requirements, tools, and technical guidance that enable ICON's Divisions, its Customers, and external partners to deliver cutting-edge printed structures with precision and confidence.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Structural Technical Authority
Serve as ICON's primary structural engineering subject matter expert for its Building Products and Systems, providing senior-level technical input and direction to ICON's Technology product teams, Divisions, external partners.
Develop, maintain, and evolve structural engineering requirements, design standards, and calculations as ICON's structural system configurations and product portfolio expand into new market types, building uses, and climate zones.
Act as a structural technical resource for complex structural questions from cross-functional teams, escalated customer engagements, and development partners working with ICON systems.
Ensure structural engineering product development work maintains alignment with applicable structural building codes and design standards (ACI, ASCE, TMS etc.), and appropriate product testing for code compliance and product requirements testing are sufficiently scoped and defined.
Serve as the primary structural technical escalation point for ICON's Building Products & Systems - resolving structural questions and out-of-spec conditions that exceed the independent resolution capacity of ICON's customer support teams.
Interface with the Building Regulatory Affairs team on code compliance pathways.
Structural Product Development
Own the translation of structural engineering expertise into scalable rulesets, design workflows, and structured technical documentation that enable ICON's structural systems to be replicated consistently by customers across a range of projects, and market geographies.
Define structural engineering requirements and provide technical input for BuildOS products and review their implementation, serving as a structural engineering subject matter expert in software product development workflows.
Identify gaps in ICON's structural product systems and develop frameworks to close them - documenting findings, proposing solutions, and driving resolution across the relevant cross-functional teams.
Maintain a current, structured workplan for all assigned structural product development initiatives using Jira and related project management tools; proactively surface structural risks, dependencies, and timeline pressures to BACS leadership before they become blockers.
Maintain a structured intake from ICON's customer support teams for field-surfaced structural conditions, SEOR-identified edge cases, and applied project outcomes - translating recurring patterns into product development requirements and closing the gap between applied experience and the validated product system.
Review and support the development of technical content and structural design guidance - including standard details, design requirements, and application frameworks - for customers and customer teams working with ICON systems.
Provide deep structural technical support to consultant teams working with ICON's Divisions on research and development projects.
Collaborate and receive feedback from ICON's Divisions to incorporate feedback into the structural development of ICON's building products, product-level structural integration, ensuring field experience and lessons learned flow back into building product & systems.
Field Engagement & Installation Support
Represent ICON's structural engineering capabilities in internal technical forums and external conversations with customers, regulatory bodies, and industry partners as needed.
Periodic field visits to ICON field installations, and partner locations to observe installation performance, surface structural product development inputs, and validate design assumptions against real-world conditions; typically no more than one to two overnight trips per engagement.
