You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the construction and operation of AWS datacenters and infrastructure. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, develop and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies, support environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data center operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.
A successful candidate in this role will have a proven track record of delivering multiple, high-priority projects with tight timelines that require strong communication with partner teams, outside consultants and counsel, and regulatory agencies. The candidate must have a strong understanding of multi-media United States environmental permitting, remediation, and compliance requirements associated with large-scale infrastructure including experience with Clean Water Act (CWA) 404 and NPDES permitting. Preference in experience with OH EPA, IDEM, MO EDQ.
Key job responsibilities
- Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data center siting and development strategies and site-specific project delivery.
- Lead technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, natural, biological and cultural resource evaluations, and noise assessments.
- Deliver environmental permits, approvals, and plans to enable on-time and compliant construction and operations for new data center locations and expansion of existing sites.
- Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners.
- Coordinate with partner teams including Real Estate, Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, and others to optimize site designs to consider natural resource or operational constraints.
- Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable while meeting project timelines.
- Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations in support of environmental permit acquisition and regional development strategies.
- Develop, manage and track metrics to evaluate project success
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent
- Experience delivering multi-media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance projects with specific expertise in CWA 404 and NPDES permitting, groundwater protection, wastewater discharge, and natural and cultural resource evaluations
- 7+ years experience conducting environmental due diligence for greenfield and brownfield sites.
- At least 3 years of project or task management experience for environmental permitting and/or due diligence projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience managing large projects and multifunctional teams
- Data center or critical infrastructure due diligence, design, construction, and/or or risk assessment experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in multiple states within the US (preferably in OH, IN, MO, KY, MI, IL, WI).
- Experience managing and/or supporting community/public interactions.
- Experience with Smartsheet or other project management software.
- Up to 25% travel.
