Job Summary

Lead and manage the engineering team responsible for the design, engineering, and procurement of substation equipment supporting the Long Island transmission and distribution system. This role provides technical leadership and oversight for major capital projects, collaborates with Construction and Project Management teams, and ensures the delivery of safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.

The Sr Manager represents the Engineering Department on key internal and external stakeholder committees and plays a critical role in supporting grid modernization initiatives, renewable energy integration, system resiliency, and compliance with evolving New York State energy policies. This position is responsible for ensuring adequate engineering resources are available to support LIPA's capital portfolio and the ongoing transformation of the electric system.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead a diverse technical team and direct engineering services for the construction and upgrade of electric substations and related facilities, ensuring reliability, cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, safety, and maintainability.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to Operations, Project Management, Planning, Power, and Marketing/Sales departments, as well as external customers, in support of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Transmission & Distribution system.
  • Review Transmission and Distribution interconnection proposals, including HVDC, FACTS, and renewable energy projects, resulting from the NYISO interconnection process, New York State Clean Energy Standards, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), LIPA solicitations, and responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), ensuring compliance with LIPA transmission interconnection standards.
  • Review proposed modifications to existing substations and the development of new facilities identified through Planning Studies and Long Island Offshore Wind Public Policy Transmission Need (LI OSW PPTN) submissions. Evaluate projects based on reliability, operational requirements, safety, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Evaluate and recommend the application of new materials, equipment, and technologies for LIPA electric substations. Develop engineering designs, material specifications, construction specifications, associated drawings, and technical standards necessary for the successful completion of assigned projects.
  • Prepare budget and project cost estimates, develop project justifications, and participate in root cause analyses, engineering studies, investigations, and technical calculations as required.


Roles that include NERC CIP responsibilities:

Serves as the oversight /SME for all compliance activities for their org., and coordinates the processes, reviews, and approvals within the Standard Requirements for Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets (RSAWS) and CIP Evidence Request Tool (ERT) and/or O&P Evidence Tracking Sheet (ETS) for all assigned NERC Standards (O&P or CIP).

  • Read, understand and assure implementation, and compliance with all NERC Standards assigned.
  • Owns all tasks for day-to-day compliance with NERC Standard's Requirements assigned. Assures adequate internal controls are in place for any local dept.-level procedures; ensures NERC Compliance Standards Requirements are current, all evidence of compliance required is maintained/reviewed/organized to facilitate submissions to the Compliance Group, NPCC, and NERC.


Job Specific Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in either Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the operation and design of electric substations, including at least 3 years of direct supervisory experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable industry standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, and other standards related to substation engineering, design, and operation.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate team members, while effectively collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of major substation equipment and advanced ability to interpret electrical and civil construction drawings.
  • Compliance with the Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required.


Desired:

  • New York State Professional Engineering (PE) License highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience on high-visibility projects, initiatives, or functional teams.

As an employee of PSEG Long Island, you should be aware that during storm/outage restoration efforts, you may be required to perform functions different from normal operations and work extended hours beyond your regular work schedule. You may also be required to work on premise or in an alternate location as directed by the company.
