Job Summary

Part of AEP's Cybersecurity and Identity & Access Management (IAM) team, this role delivers secure, reliable, and compliant identity governance and access control solutions for both electronic and physical access management across the enterprise. The Solution Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting Identity Governance Administration (IGA) solutions that strengthen AEP's security posture and regulatory compliance. This includes identity lifecycle management, role-based access control (RBAC), access certifications, provisioning, automation, and system integrations in accordance with established security architecture and best practices. The role supports the ongoing enhancement and operation of AEP's IGA platforms and related security technologies, participating in solution design, testing, implementation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities. Working within Agile or Waterfall methodologies, this position collaborates closely with Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, Application Support, Compliance, Audit, Project Management, Business Analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable and effective access management solutions.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks:

  • Design, implement, support, and enhance Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions that strengthen enterprise security, compliance, and operational effectiveness.

  • Support the ongoing stabilization, optimization, and expansion of the IGA platform, including onboarding disconnected applications and advancing access governance capabilities.

  • Develop and maintain identity lifecycle management processes, automated workflows, integrations, provisioning, access certifications, and governance controls.

  • Lead and support Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), access review, segregation of duties, and entitlement governance initiatives.

  • Partner with business units, application owners, infrastructure teams, and cybersecurity stakeholders to analyze requirements and deliver effective access management solutions.

  • Interpret business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable, secure, and compliant IAM designs and implementations.

  • Support remediation of audit findings and compliance requirements while ensuring adherence to security policies and regulatory standards.

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve platform, integration, and access-related issues, including participation in production support and incident response activities.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, system configurations, and support materials.

  • Identify and implement opportunities for automation, process improvement, and operational efficiencies across IAM services.

  • Provide engineering support and cross-training for Physical Access Management (PAM) systems to improve operational resiliency.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on IAM technologies, governance processes, and security best practices.

  • Communicate project status, risks, issues, and recommendations effectively to technical and business stakeholders.

  • May provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to team members.

Additional required skills:

  • Experience implementing and supporting enterprise Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) platforms is preferred.

  • Experience with Identity and Access Governance platforms such as Saviynt, SailPoint, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Oracle Identity Manager, or similar identity governance solutions is strongly preferred.

  • Experience supporting access certification, provisioning, RBAC, access governance, and compliance initiatives in a large enterprise environment is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering technology solutions using modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar).

  • Proven experience applying DevOps principles throughout the technology lifecycle, including CI/CD automation, infrastructure as code, monitoring, observability, security integration, and production support in enterprise environments.

  • Strong understanding of Identity and Access Governance principles, including provisioning, deprovisioning, role management, access certifications, segregation of duties, and governance controls.

  • Experience supporting audit, regulatory, and compliance requirements such as SOX, NERC CIP, PCI, or similar frameworks.

  • Experience developing and supporting enterprise applications, integrations, and automation solutions using Java, C#, Python, SQL, Oracle Database, APIs, and related technologies.

  • Experience troubleshooting complex security and access management issues across cloud and on-premises environments.

  • Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment while managing multiple priorities and delivering results with minimal supervision.

Other competencies:

  • Professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CIAM, Saviynt Certified Engineer, SailPoint Certified Engineer, or similar.

  • Experience implementing enterprise RBAC programs and identity governance transformations.

  • Experience working within regulated utility, energy, or critical infrastructure environments.

  • Familiarity with cloud technologies and modern cybersecurity architectures.

  • Experience implementing or supporting AI-enabled security, identity governance, or workflow automation solutions within enterprise environments.
