Full Job Description
$85,000 - $115,000

As a Software Engineer II, you will help shape and improve the experience of Vertafore customers by developing and supporting high-quality software features across the MGA products platform.

You will work cross-functionally with Customer Support, Account Management, Product Management, Quality Assurance, and Product Development to understand customer and business needs and translate them into reliable, maintainable product solutions.

You will work as part of a fast-paced, collaborative team of business analysts, software engineers, and quality assurance engineers. You will be responsible for independently completing assigned development work while collaborating with more senior engineers on broader design and architectural decisions.

Success in this role requires clear and effective communication, strong technical fundamentals, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to delivering solutions that meet customer expectations with minimal defects or rework.

Although developing and supporting software is the primary responsibility, engineers at Vertafore may also work with customer-facing teams to investigate technical issues and help improve the overall customer experience.

Core Requirements and Responsibilities:

Essential job functions included but are not limited to the following:
• Work comfortably across a full-stack web application, developing features that span frontend and backend technologies.
• Develop clean, maintainable, testable code that follows established team standards and patterns.
• Independently implement well-defined features and technical solutions based on business requirements and technical specifications.
• Participate in the design and refinement of product features, contributing technical ideas and identifying implementation considerations.
• Be responsible for interface design, technical documentation, automated testing, and unit testing for assigned work.
• Work effectively within a small, collaborative team and complete assigned work with limited supervision.
• Make sound technical decisions within assigned features or functional areas while seeking guidance for decisions with broader product impact.
• Create technical artifacts and documentation that are useful to the development team and other stakeholders.
• Learn and incorporate new technologies, frameworks, and development approaches as appropriate.
• Design, build, test, and support AI-enabled product features using established Python-based AI and agent frameworks.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and product stakeholders to translate business problems into practical AI-assisted workflows or product capabilities.
• Develop new product features and support, maintain, and troubleshoot existing functionality.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues across the application stack, including frontend, backend, databases, infrastructure, and integrations.
• Participate actively in code reviews, both by submitting code for review and reviewing the work of other engineers.
• Follow established procedures, standards, and methodologies related to software development, testing, security, and release management.
• Contribute feedback and suggestions for improving engineering processes, development practices, and product quality.
• Share knowledge with other team members through documentation, technical discussions, pairing, and informal mentoring.
• Follow relevant industry trends and developments in the open-source and AI communities.
• Assist customer-facing teams with the investigation and resolution of technical issues affecting customers.
• Learn the technical and regulatory complexities associated with the insurance industry.
• Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to improve productivity while remaining responsible for the quality, security, maintainability, and correctness of delivered code.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related technical field) or equivalent practical experience
• 2-3 years of professional experience with python web frameworks - Django or similar technology
• 2+ years of experience with Vue 3 or similar reactive JS framework
• 2+ years of experience with Restful APIs required
• Experience working with Docker and Docker Compose
• Experience working in an Agile environment required
• Experience working with relational database technologies (e.g., Oracle, SQLServer, PostgreSQL, etc.)
• Experience in security best practices for software and data platforms
• Are interested and capable of learning other programming languages as needed.
• Demonstrated interest or practical exposure to generative AI, large language models, agent-based systems, or AI-enabled software development.

Additional Requirements and Details:
• Travel required up to 10% of the time.
• Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds.
• Frequent repetitive hand and arm movements required to operate a computer.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (working on a computer, etc.).
• Frequent sitting and/or standing.
