HSSE Safety Shift Manager

APM Terminals Pier 400 is looking for an HSSE Safety Shift Manager to lead the tactical execution of HSSE requirements on shift. This role exercises independent judgment to identify and address safety risks in real time, responds to incidents, keeps documentation and analytics current, and applies Lean methodologies to continuously improve how we work.
Key responsibilities
- Exercise independent judgment to recognize and identify HSSE risk, and communicate and act on issues within your scope of authority
- Address HSSE risks that arise during the shift and follow up through to completion of mitigations
- Respond to incidents and HSSE concerns
- Approve and stay engaged with HSSE processes such as risk assessment, permit to work, and management of change
- Write HSSE reports based on available data and conditions
- Use Lean methodologies to improve processes
- Enter HSSE data into corporate databases and Microsoft suite programs
- Perform site inspections and gemba walks under general direction using pre-determined criteria
- Ensure HSSE follows the APMT Way of Work and act as a facilitator for HSSE problem solving
- Coordinate HSSE vendors, and coordinate and direct security staff, as required

What we're looking for
- Bachelor's degree in Science with a focus on STEM, environmental management, or sustainability
- 0-3 years of experience in HSSE
- Proficient in the written word, developing presentations, and analyzing data
- Computer skills: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and Access databases
- Background in HSSE regulations and management is highly desirable

Salary: $120K - $130K
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Role Scope & Work EnvironmentYou will report directly to the Interface & Integration Director. This role has no direct reports but is expected to supervise multiple contractors and third‑party vendors. Work is performed primarily on‑site at the terminal in Los Angeles, CA, across indoor and outdoor environments, with occasional domestic and international travel.
