DescriptionNorthrop Grumman’s Defense Systems sector is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead a team of Mechanical Engineers in Roy, UT. This position is in our Strategic Deterrent Systems Division to execute the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase of the Sentinel Program.
The primary objective of this role is to collaborate across Systems Engineering, System Test, Global Supply Chain, suppliers, and other Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to develop and review Installation and Assembly designs, hardware requirements, specifications, and analyses for the purpose of supporting incremental system maturity milestones and hardware deliveries. The successful candidate will be comfortable with working in a dynamic people-focused environment and collaborating across multiple internal and external stakeholders in order to achieve organizational goals.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Driving on-time delivery of work products to support the design timelines of the Launch Systems organization.
- Supporting a comprehensive risk and opportunity management plan.
- Ensuring adherence to the Sentinel technical baseline and associated processes for the Launcher Closure System team.
- Balancing stringent quality standards for technical artifacts (e.g. Product Definition Packages) with the rapid pace of procurement, fabrication, and construction of test assets and early prototypes.
- Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with a wide range of distinct customer communities, subcontractors, and industry partners.
- Overseeing the fabrication of custom components to ensure compatibility within the system and interfacing subsystems.
- Supporting the testing of a large and complex subsystem by identifying test objectives, troubleshooting irregularities, and analyzing test data to characterize the system performance
- Mentoring other engineers of various levels of experience by providing technical guidance and fostering best-practice engineering habits.
- Making sound decisions in uncertain and difficult situations.
Basic Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) with 12 years of related experience; a Master's degree with 10 years; or a PhD with 8 years
- Requires an active U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance at time of application, current and within scope
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need
- Requires experience with CAD modeling and product lifecycle management (PLM) tools
- Requires experience generating and releasing engineering drawing packages
- Requires experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack-up analysis
- Requires a minimum 5 years of formal experience leading the technical rigor on a project
- Requires experience with hydraulic and/or pneumatic driven systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency with Siemens NX CAD software and Teamcenter Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software
- Expert-level proficiency with GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Experience with DOD, Military, and/or Industry specifications including ASME, ASTM, NAS, and Military Standards
- Experience with testing and analyzing results to evaluate system performance
- Experience overseeing the fabrication of custom components
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Proactive and results-oriented, with a strong sense of ownership
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills when conveying technical content
- Able to work independently, function in a dynamic environment, and be flexible to changing direction

This position’s standard work schedule is 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

Primary Level Salary Range: $139,000.00 - $208,600.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
