As a member of the Blue Origin family of companies, Honeybee Robotics has been at the forefront of robotics for over 40 years. Our Colorado location specializes in creating advanced motion control solutions for NASA, defense, and commercial programs. Our work has played a critical role in thousands of projects, spanning from conceptual design studies to flight missions, including NASA's Artemis I Mission and the Roman Space Telescope. We are seeking technically brilliant individuals who are passionate about their work, thrive in collaborative environments, and have a laser focus on the details that drive excellence.
At Blue Origin, the Motion Control Business Unit (MCBU) at Honeybee Robotics designs, manufactures, and tests high-performance motion control components and integrated solutions for the most demanding aerospace missions. Our portfolio includes actuators, motors, gearboxes, Solar Array Drive Assemblies (SADAs), Reaction Wheel Assemblies (RWAs), gimbals, and Thrust Vector Control (TVC) systems. Our Test Department ensures every component meets the rigorous standards required for mission success.
As the Lead Test Engineer for the Sustaining Team, you will own the development and execution of testing for MCBU's sustaining programs: SADAs, P35 products, and framed motors. You will serve as technical lead and provide day-to-day tasking for a team of test engineers. You will also design and develop test Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for motors and controllers. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy and represent the Test Department in cross-functional design and program reviews.
Special Mentions: Relocation provided. Travel expected up to 10% of the time.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Technical Leadership
- Own test strategy, planning, and execution for the sustaining programs. Establish common test architectures, standards, and reusable assets.
- Serve as primary technical point of contact for sustaining test, coordinating with engineering, program management, quality, supply chain, and customers.
- Author, review, and approve test plans, procedures, and reports. Present plans, results, and findings at internal reviews, Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), and customer milestones.
Test GSE / EGSE Development
- Design, develop, and maintain test GSE and EGSE for motors and motor controllers, including power supplies and simulators, load and dynamometer systems, breakout boxes, controller interface racks, and data acquisition systems.
- Define GSE architecture and interface requirements against flight ICDs. Perform safe-to-mate verification before UUT integration.
- Maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, and documentation for configuration control and reuse. Troubleshoot GSE issues to minimize campaign downtime.
Test Execution and Mentoring
- Oversee and perform functional, performance, life, acceptance, and environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, shock, EMI/EMC) of motion control hardware.
- Lead anomaly investigations through root cause and corrective action. Support Failure Review Boards (FRBs) as technical lead or SME.
- Analyze test data, identify trends and risks, and track metrics such as schedule adherence and failure trends.
- Mentor engineers and technicians. Provide Design-for-Test (DFT) feedback to design teams. Drive improvements in test efficiency, repeatability, and automation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of hands-on test engineering experience, preferably in aerospace, spaceflight, or precision electromechanical hardware.
- Demonstrated experience developing test GSE, test stands, and fixtures from concept through implementation, including schematic capture and interface documentation. Experience testing motor controllers and/or motors is strongly desired.
- Demonstrated experience as a technical lead for engineers or technical teams, or as a lead on multiple concurrent programs.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical test instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Test Architect or Staff Test Engineer experience.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Experience testing mechanisms, actuators, SADAs, gimbals, motors, or drive assemblies.
- Test automation experience (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, C#).
- Familiarity with environmental test standards (MIL-STD-810, GEVS GSFC-STD-7000) and EMI/EMC test practices.
- Experience with flight or flight-like hardware in a cleanroom or controlled laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with harness workmanship standards (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620) and AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality systems.
- Experience supporting sustaining or production-phase programs, including acceptance testing, obsolescence, and design-change verification.
- Experience supporting test campaigns at external facilities or customer sites.
