Senior Sustaining Engineer - Electromechanical Systems

Position Summary: As a Sr. Sustaining Engineer, you will focus on maintaining and improving existing products to ensure consistent quality, performance, and on-time delivery. Your responsibilities include troubleshooting and resolving complex production issues on a short time frame, implementing design enhancements, and coordinating changes with Quality Assurance, Operations, and R&D teams. You will conduct root cause analysis, lead value engineering initiatives, and optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency. Additionally, you will manage and document engineering changes using CAD software and PLM systems, ensuring compliance with customer and engineering standards. As a senior team member, you will mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers, fostering their development and improving their knowledge of firearms platforms.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead or independently troubleshoot and identify the root cause for complex production issues of all firearms products.
  • Test and implement product improvements, modifications, and design enhancements through drawing and model changes to existing product using SOLIDWORKS and Agile PLM system.
  • Lead the transition of new products from Research and Development to production with a focus on DFM (design for manufacturing).
  • Use project management techniques to meet project timelines. Support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Generate clearly defined product drawings using GD&T and stackup analysis to ensure interchangeable parts and conformance to product performance requirements. Implement with SIG Agile product life cycle database. Work will focus on NPI (New Product Introduction) and entire production lines.
  • Lead and execute value engineering efforts through manufacturing reviews, tolerance relief, or qualifying alternate parts, materials, and/or suppliers.
  • Design and conduct experiments to establish robust product performance that meets customer requirements.
  • Work closely with R&D, Quality Assurance, and Operations teams to coordinate and communicate changes and improvements. Lead the teams in ensuring that designs are feasible and optimized for manufacturing.
  • Serve as a technical expert in the engineering team, providing insights and guidance on product function and reliability. Train and mentor less senior Engineers and Technicians.
  • Review and disposition of non-conforming materials for production. Lead coordination with operations and manufacturing regarding rework processes as needed.
  • Lead PPI (Product and Process improvement) efforts.
  • Participate in 5S Workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities, including requests for maintenance when needed for both personal space and multi-use department spaces.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Education/Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent technical discipline with 7-10 years of previous experience.
  • In dept knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ASME Y14.5M-2009.
  • Certification for Shainin Red X and/or Six Sigma desired.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and Monday.com. Must be an expert in SOLIDWORKS, the use of data analysis programs, and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Must be able to demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Organization of documentation and recordkeeping shall be to a high standard. Skilled at the use of Gantt charts and formal project management techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of manufacturing capabilities of machined, injection molded, MIM (Metal Injection Molded), and stamped components.
  • Ability to mentor and train junior engineers.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Strong team-oriented mindset with the ability to lead collaborative efforts.


Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
