ABOUT THIS ROLE
We’re hiring a senior consumer PM to own both surfaces: roadmap, requirements, analytics, research, and results. You’ll be the only product strategist in the business, working directly with our founder and partnering with a Product Owner who runs sprint execution. The team is small enough that you’ll do the work yourself, with more autonomy and executive access than this level usually comes with.
You’ll be responsible for:
Roadmap and strategy. Own what gets built, in what order, on which surface, and why. You’ll research and build the roadmap yourself and then bring it to the founder for input, rather than documenting a plan handed to you.Define what app and web are each for and which audiences they serve, and move features that prove out on mobile over to web. Maintain a quarterly plan and near-term backlog, weigh competing requests from the business and instructors, and sequence work so something meaningful ships every week.
Requirements and delivery. Write the specs: user stories, acceptance criteria, edge cases, states, dependencies. Set the success metric and the kill condition before development starts. Work daily with the Product Owner, who runs backlog mechanics and ceremonies against your criteria. Sit in planning and refinement, make scope calls in real time, unblock engineering. Own release readiness, including instrumentation, QA criteria, rollout and rollback. Track delivery commitments and report against them.
Analytics and measurement. Own app analytics: instrumentation coverage, event taxonomy, metric definitions, dashboard integrity. Partner with our analytics resource so new features are counted correctly inside company-wide tracking and goals. Set the retention measurement standard, including install cohorts, acquisition-source segmentation, and baseline discipline. Watch cohort retention, activation, and feature depth, and flag deterioration early. Baseline before launch, then report what actually happened.
Research. Design and personally run the research explaining why users stay and why they leave: interviews, surveys, usability sessions. Build a behavioral segmentation of who succeeds versus who churns. Find and validate the activation moment that predicts retention. Track store reviews, support themes, and in-product feedback as ongoing signal, and keep an eye on category benchmarks.
App Store optimization. Own ASO as a discipline, not a release-day asset refresh: keyword and category strategy, listing copy, screenshots, and store-to-install conversion. Test store changes and measure them. Own ratings and reviews, including when the app asks for a rating, how reviews get answered, and what review themes tell the roadmap. Tie install source to downstream retention so store performance is judged on user quality, not install count.
Experimentation. Run it properly: hypothesis, test design, holdouts, honest reads, and killing what doesn’t work. Stage builds so an early result earns the rest of the investment instead of the full build being the first test.
Working across the business. Present cohort performance, research, and roadmap reasoning directly to the founder and CEO. Be the intake point for product requests from marketing, instructor operations, and elsewhere. Partner with marketing on the handoff between acquisition and first-run experience, and brief design on requirements.
YOUR EXPERIENCE:
7- 10 years in consumer product management, with substantial mobile experience across iOS and Android.
Startup background, seed through Series C. You’ve worked on a small product team with no research function, no dedicated analyst, and no program management layer.
You’ve owned a retention, activation, or engagement number at a consumer product.
Speed. You’ve run a product where meaningful work is shipped weekly, and you can explain how you kept analysis and delivery moving at the same time.
Mobile retention measurement depth. Install cohorts versus blended aggregates, segmenting by acquisition source, holding a baseline, and knowing what size of change is actually readable at a given cohort size.
Hands-on qualitative research. You’ve designed and run user and churn interviews yourself, not briefed them out to an agency or a research team.
Specification craft. Engineering can build from what you write without guessing. Be ready to walk us through a real spec.
Working knowledge of poker. Enough to reason about game mechanics and judge whether a feature actually helps a learner. Literacy, not mastery. You don’t need to be a serious player.
