Full Job Description
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Senior Piping Designer who turns P&IDs and process requirements into buildable, code-compliant piping for skid-based, modular and containerized systems. You own piping design from early layout through detailed isometrics and release for fabrication, and you know when to bring in engineering for stress, supports and nozzle loads.
Whether your background is in chemical, pharmaceutical, energy, food and beverage, water treatment or other process industries, you understand how piping is fabricated, installed and maintained, and you design with that in mind.
You are comfortable working directly with clients. You communicate clearly, ask the right questions, and turn their input into clear, documented project requirements the team can build from.
You take ownership of your systems, check the work of other designers, and help raise our piping standards while staying hands-on.
This position is based onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with occasional travel to customer and supplier locations, typically less than 25%.
What You Get To Do
• Lead piping design for skids, modules and containerized systems, from P&IDs through detailed design and release for fabrication.
• Develop piping layouts and routing in 3D, and produce plans, sections, isometrics, spool drawings and piping bills of material.
• Select and specify pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, supports and in-line instruments to project pipe specs and ASME B31.3 (or B31.1 as applicable).
• Design pipe supports and work with engineering on stress, thermal growth, flexibility and nozzle loads.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to develop integrated equipment and system designs.
• Lead technical design reviews, evaluate design solutions, and provide guidance to project teams and customers.
• Partner with fabrication and assembly teams to resolve technical challenges and support successful equipment builds and installations.
• Support project planning, technical proposals, and engineering estimates.
• Mentor junior designers and drafters, providing technical guidance and reviewing design work.
• Improve design standards, tools, and processes to enhance quality, consistency, and efficiency.
What You Bring To The Team
Required
• 7+ years of piping design experience in an industrial process, chemical, energy or engineering-services environment.
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD 2D/3D and a 3D plant design tool such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx or SolidWorks Routing.
• Strong working knowledge of ASME B31.3, pipe specifications, P&ID interpretation, and valve and fitting selection.
• Experience producing fabrication-ready isometrics, spool drawings and piping bills of material.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, dimensioning, tolerances, and fabrication requirements.
• Ability to independently manage complex design assignments from concept through detailed design and release.
• Experience reviewing technical drawings, solving design challenges, and collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance to other designers.
• An associate degree, bachelor's degree, technical certification or equivalent experience in Drafting/Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• Ability to work onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with travel up to 25%.
Preferred
• Pipe stress analysis experience (Caesar II) or close work with stress engineers.
• Experience with skid-mounted or modular process systems and their fabrication.
• Experience with 3D laser scans and point clouds.
• Familiarity with pressure vessel design (ASME Section VIII) and SolidWorks.
• Experience developing technical estimates, supporting proposals, or participating in customer design reviews.
• Experience mentoring junior designers or leading technical design activities.
• Knowledge of industrial safety standards and equipment design requirements.
