Full Job Description
Currently, we are in search of an exceptional and driven Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Gillespie & Powers, you'll play a pivotal role in advancing our company's mission and leading our team to greater achievements. If you're on the lookout for a thrilling and challenging opportunity where your skills and experience can have a profound impact, then this role is the ideal fit for you.
We look forward to receiving your application and answering any questions you have about filling our Senior Mechanical Engineer.
Job Summary:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you design and deliver mechanical systems for GPx's heavy industrial thermal process equipment, mainly aluminium melting and holding furnaces. You are a technical specialist who solves practical problems with no standard solution, produces checked calculations and drawings, and works alongside the Applications, Electrical and Controls, Proposals and Build teams. You work within the GPx Engineering Management Model, keep your own items on the engineering board current, and support Developing Lead Engineers and junior engineers. Depending on your development, you may be assigned scoped work packages or a Developing Lead Engineer role under the Engineering Development Framework. Leading a whole project is the Project Lead Engineer role, which is a separate step.
Key Responsibilities:
Conceptualize and create solutions for complex mechanical design issues on furnaces and associated plant.
Produce design calculations covering combustion, hydraulic, pneumatic, structural, exhaust and stack, and thermal heat balance, each with a stated design basis (standard or code, assumptions and source data).
Start from the GPx controlled masters and standards, re-validate them against the current contract, and raise change requests to the master owner when you find an error or an improvement.
Create 3D models of assemblies, sub-assemblies, parts and detail drawings, and detail drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and Y14.100 drafting standards.
Analyze designs and systems for compliance with applicable standards and customer specifications (for example NFPA 86, ASME, structural codes or customer specific), checking performance guarantees can be achieved.
Select proper materials, finishes and hardness for design applications.
Create and maintain the Bill of Materials for your scope, accurate and aligned to drawings and models, and prepare requisitions and technical input for quotes.
Check team members' models and drawings for design intent and accuracy, and arrange independent checks of safety-critical calculations.
Take part in design reviews, internal and with clients, and follow the design process flow.
Keep your assigned items on the engineering board current: owner, required by date, status and decisions, with a note of what the supporting report contains and where the design rationale sits.
Update weekly EVA hours for your work, and raise risks, changes and blockers early with options and a recommendation.
Update and manage redline activities for your drawings, and confirm your discipline content is checked and technically ready before release.
Provide site and commissioning technical support, and feed lessons learned back to the project and to the controlled masters.
Mentor and develop junior engineers and Developing Lead Engineers in technical method, and teach and follow department standards.
Respond to technical questions from the project manager, client or procurement within 48 hours, aiming for 24.
Skills & Qualifications:
Able to conceptualize and create solutions, and to perform analysis and problem-solving resolution.
Strong working knowledge of furnace and process plant design: combustion, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, exhaust and stack, thermal heat balance and refractory.
Able to design weldment structures and apply FEA analysis.
Able to design pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and size drive systems and their applications.
Able to read and interpret technical specifications, P&ID schematics and process flow diagrams.
Able to analyze designs and systems for compliance with applicable standards (for example NFPA 86, ASME, structural codes or customer specific).
Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 and Y14.100 drafting standards.
Working knowledge of material selection, finishes and hardness.
Proficient in Inventor and AutoCAD, with experience of Vault-based document control.
Proficient in producing bills of materials, quotes and requisitions.
Working knowledge of parametric design methodology.
Knowledge of assembly tolerance stack-up analysis or GD&T certification.
Excellent understanding of machine shop and welding process and design methodology.
Able to work with electrical and controls engineers to integrate mechanical and control requirements.
Able to deliver high-quality work on time and within the agreed hours.
Takes responsibility for assignments, and keeps the engineering board and weekly EVA current.
Records design decisions and the reasons for them, including alternatives rejected.
Able to work effectively with internal teams, vendors and customers to deadlines, and to take and give direction.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; follows company standards and policy; a team player.
Education & Experience:
BSME or BSMET Mechanical Engineering or 4 years of equivalent experience.
4 years of experience in Inventor; ACP certification in Inventor desirable.
6 years of experience in mechanical design in a heavy industrial or process equipment environment.
2 years of experience in the industrial furnace industry.
Other: Travel: up to 20%. Performance in this role is assessed against the GPx Skills & Competency Matrix and the Engineering Development Framework.
