The Senior Mechanical Designer is a prominent individual contributor responsible for the design, development, and integration of electromechanical systems and subsystems for advanced analytical instrumentation. This role owns end-to-end mechanical design execution from concept through commercialization and sustaining. This role has strong independence and ownership, typically progressing toward responsible roles including ownership of subsystems or modules, the mentoring of junior engineers, and leading design reviews. The role strongly lends itself to a self-motivated individual who can communicate very effectively, in a team environment, and has a working knowledge of associated technical disciplines such as electronics and physics.
This position reports to the Mechanical Hardware Design (MHD) Senior Manager within the R&D Department located in Concord, Ontario, Canada and will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Design and develop innovative, cost-effective mechanical technologies for current and next-generation mass spectrometry products.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate concepts and requirements into functional prototypes, involving hands-on prototype development, testing, troubleshooting, and evaluation.
- Deliver complete design packages, including CAD models, GD&T drawings, tolerance and cost analyses, bills of materials, and product documentation.
- Drive projects to completion by meeting schedules, tracking issues to resolution, and ensuring timely delivery of design milestones.
- Partner with cross-functional teams throughout product development and commercialization while applying Lean/Six Sigma principles and supporting released products to improve quality, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Bachelor27s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline, with a strong foundation in stress analysis, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and gas/vacuum systems.
- 10+ years of successful experience designing high-technology electromechanical systems and subsystems in a product development environment.
- Proficiency with industry-standard 2D/3D CAD tools and a strong understanding of ISO GPS and/or ASME GD&T principles.
- Experience applying DFx methodologies, DFMEA, and best-practice design workflows to optimize product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Knowledge of advanced fabrication and inspection techniques, coupled with strong communication, teamwork, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Experience with CATIA V5 and the design of mass spectrometry, medical, analytical, or other advanced technology products.
- Knowledge of electronics, physics, electrostatic field theory, and low-level vacuum/gas system design.
- Proficiency with CMM and other inspection systems
