Overview

CANDU Energy Inc./AtkinsRéalis Nuclear Inc. is actively seeking a qualified Senior Mechanical/Piping Designer to support engineering roles for nuclear projects in major areas, such as, new build in the province of Ontario, international new builds, refurbishment, and continuous plant operation support modifications for nuclear power plants.

Your role

This position requires working on fast paced technically complex projects in the nuclear industries. Typical duties and essential functions will include but not be limited to the preparation, design, modification, coordination, and/or review of the following:

  • Lead and coordinate complex mechanical/piping design activities across multiple projects with minimal supervision, ensuring quality, consistency, and adherence to project requirements.
  • Prepare, check, and coordinate high-complexity 3D models, 2D drawings, layouts, and design deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior and intermediate designers, promoting knowledge sharing and professional development.
  • Review and approve design deliverables, drawings, 3D models, and construction packages for compliance with applicable codes, standards, CAD requirements, and project specifications.
  • Enforce applicable CAD, drafting, modelling, and project standards, and support updates to procedures, work instructions, templates, and quality checklists.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces between engineering, design, procurement, construction, and client teams to resolve technical issues and ensure project alignment.
  • Support project planning, including estimates, schedules, resource forecasting, progress tracking, and proposal inputs.
  • Monitor CAD/drafting progress against budgets, schedules, and deliverable plans; identify risks, issues, and corrective actions.
  • Lead model reviews, design reviews, constructability reviews, clash resolution sessions, and site/system walkdowns as required.
  • Act as the primary design focal point for clients, stakeholders, and project teams, ensuring timely resolution of design-related issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement in CAD standards, design processes, 3D modelling practices, procedures, templates, and quality checklists.

About you

  • College diploma or equivalent work experience with a minimum of 10 years in mechanical design and drafting.
  • Strong mechanical/piping design experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading design teams and coordinating multidisciplinary engineering projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Nuclear industry experience and familiarity with CSA, ASME, and client-specific standards are considered strong assets.
  • Working knowledge in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Raster Design, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Micro Station, Navisworks Manage and SolidWorks.
  • Strong understanding of design execution processes, quality management systems, and engineering deliverable requirements.
  • Advanced proficiency with Hexagon Smart 3D/S3D is required.
  • Ability to take marked up engineering drawings and incorporate changes into AutoCAD files.
  • Proven ability to mentor designers, perform technical reviews, and manage competing priorities while meeting project schedules.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with staff in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
