Job Description

The Senior Highway Engineer - Highway Lead is a senior-level civil engineering role focused on leading multidisciplinary transportation infrastructure design projects in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The position supports the delivery of highway and bridge projects for the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) within a consulting engineering environment operating in a hybrid work mode (three days per week in office).

The role encompasses detailed design and project leadership across freeway widening, interchange design, roadway rehabilitation, bridge rehabilitation and replacement, and intersection improvements. Work involves coordination with regulatory agencies, utilities, and contractors, while navigating MTO standards, policies, and approvals processes throughout the project lifecycle.

The ideal candidate brings 13+ years of progressive experience in highway design and transportation engineering, with demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary project delivery, stakeholder coordination, and technical oversight within Ontario-based infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • As the Senior Highway Engineer - Highway Lead on MTO projects, lead on multidiscipline detail design highway and bridge projects for MTO.
  • Providing mentorship, support, and oversight to other engineers and technical staff working on your projects.
  • Supporting and leading a project team to complete designs ranging from freeways, urban and rural multi-lane and two-lane facilities, interchanges, and intersections.
  • Ensuring that corporate and client QA/QC practices are completed on all projects.
  • Coordinating with clients, approval agencies, utility companies, contractors, etc.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with industry professionals, consultants and other business leaders.
  • Preparing proposals, project work plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Monitoring overall work progress and technical performance on projects to ensure timelines and targets are being met.


Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
  • Minimum 13 years of progressive experience in highway design and transportation engineering.
  • Demonstrated project management experience within a consulting engineering environment.
  • Strong knowledge of MTO policies, standards, guidelines, and operational procedures.
  • Proven experience delivering detailed design for highway infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in stakeholder coordination including regulatory agencies and utility companies.
  • Valid driver's license with access to a registered and insured vehicle.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement.

Assets
  • MTO RAQS prequalification across relevant specialties.
  • Experience on transportation infrastructure projects across GTA, Southwestern, or Northern Ontario.
  • Advanced expertise in multidisciplinary project coordination (roadway, bridge, utilities integration).
