The Opportunity

This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Substation & Transmission business, supporting the design and delivery of critical electrical infrastructure that powers communities and industries today and into the future. Protection & Controls professionals contribute to the design of substation protection, control, monitoring, and communication systems, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of high-voltage electrical substations.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of high-quality engineering 2D and 3D deliverables for complex substation infrastructure projects. Under minimal supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of protection and control engineering principles and design practices, with a focus on creating and modifying detailed design drawings using advanced techniques in industry-standard design tools such as Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD Electrical.

This role requires the ability to develop engineering deliverables including protection and control schematics, AC and DC elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, relay panel arrangements, interconnection drawings, and substation communication system designs. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of industry standards, project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements while collaborating with engineers, designers, and project teams to deliver accurate, constructible, and reliable design packages.

Experience with substation protection and control systems, relay applications, SCADA integration, and station communication networks is highly desirable. The candidate should possess a strong attention to detail and the ability to support projects throughout the design lifecycle, from conceptual development through construction support and project closeout.

Key Responsibilities

  • Functions as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor
  • Applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline
  • Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions
  • Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) with standardized procedures to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
  • Provides consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards
  • Establishes and communicates appropriate design and graphic standards
  • Reviews project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content
  • Promotes quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency
  • Ensures deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards
  • May contribute to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes
  • May participate and lead process improvement and change management activities

Assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating appropriate design standards and process improvement activities
  • Identifies and supports training and development needs for supervised personnel
  • Recognized for expertise in one or more areas. May be assigned special assignments depending on technical expertise. Assignments may involve solving a particular design problem or participating in a design team focused on completing an assigned project task
  • Makes presentations and conducts training classes within a specialized area of expertise.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology required.
  • Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Typically a minimum of 11 years related work experience.
