The Senior Director, Subscriptions & Lifecycle Strategy is a newly created role responsible for owning and growing The Hill's subscription business from the ground up. This is a builder position. You will inherit a product at launch and be responsible for scaling it, setting the strategy, and doing the work required to hit growth targets.
You are equally comfortable thinking through a pricing strategy and reviewing a campaign brief. You understand how users move through a product, where value is created and lost, and how to build the subscription experiences, upsells, and lifecycle programs that turn readers into long-term paying members.
Core Responsibilities
Subscription Business Ownership
• Own the P&L and subscriber growth targets for The Hill Insider, with scope expanding to include other Nexstar subscription efforts over time
• Set and track KPIs across the full subscriber funnel: acquisition, trial conversion, engagement, retention, and churn
• Drive pricing, packaging, and offer strategy in partnership with revenue and product leadership
• Develop the business case for new subscription initiatives, product expansions, and upsell opportunities
Product & Lifecycle Strategy
• Use deep understanding of the user journey across both free and paid experiences to identify where subscription value is created, where it breaks down, and what interventions will move the needle
• Partner with product and editorial to develop subscription experiences, member benefits, and upsell paths grounded in how users behave
• Own the strategic roadmap for lifecycle marketing: onboarding, engagement, churn intervention, renewal, and win-back
• Translate subscriber behavior and data into product decisions, connecting what users do to what the product should become
Execution & Cross-Functional Orchestration
• Work hands-on with the subscription team day-to-day, reviewing briefs, pressure-testing hypotheses, and unblocking execution
• Manage internal shared services relationships with engineering, design, and PMO, ensuring the subscription roadmap is resourced, prioritized, and delivered
• Align editorial, marketing, revenue, and product around shared subscription goals without always having direct authority over those functions
• Serve as the escalation point for decisions that span multiple functions or require senior alignment
Qualifications
• 8+ years in subscription growth, digital product, or lifecycle strategy
• Demonstrated track record of owning subscription growth targets in a consumer-facing digital product, ideally from an early or growth stage
• Fluency in subscription metrics: MRR, churn, LTV, trial conversion, cohort retention
• Strong product instincts with the ability to read user behavior and translate it into product and lifecycle decisions
• Proven ability to influence and drive results in a matrixed organization without full organizational control
• Hands-on operator comfortable moving between strategy and execution without losing sight of either
• Familiarity with MarTech and subscription infrastructure: CDP, ESP, billing platforms
• Media industry experience preferred, political or news media a plus
• Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus
