Description Job Location The primary work location for this role is Berwyn, PA with a hybrid work model.
The Team You'll Join The Database Administration team at Envestnet is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, security, and operational readiness of the production databases that power our Wealth platforms. As a Senior Database Administrator, you'll be a senior technical contributor on a collaborative, cross-functional team that supports a diverse open-source database estate across both on-premises infrastructure and AWS cloud environments. We're looking for someone with solid, hands-on experience across both MySQL and PostgreSQL; you'll start primarily supporting our MySQL platforms and apply that dual expertise as the estate evolves. You'll lead the resolution of complex incidents, tune high-transaction workloads, support releases and platform upgrades, and mentor junior engineers, all while partnering closely with infrastructure, development, and application support teams.
How You'll ContributeResponsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, security, and operational readiness of production databases supporting Wealth platforms. The function monitors database health, responds to incidents, tunes performance, supports releases and upgrades, enforces secure and compliant operations, and plans for capacity and scale. It also drives long-term resilience through archival strategies, standardized procedures, and cross-functional engineering improvements.
- Applies strong functional and technical database expertise to manage complex support activities, including system access and security issues across assigned platforms with limited oversight.
- Leads technical triage and resolution of non-routine database incidents, including deep analysis of queries, execution plans, blocking, deadlocks, replication, and platform dependencies.
- Performs advanced performance tuning to improve query efficiency, reduce infrastructure consumption, and stabilize database workload under production conditions.
- Plans and executes database support for application releases, including complex schema changes, data corrections, deployment sequencing, rollback considerations, and post-deployment verification.
- Supports database platform upgrades and compatibility changes by assessing risk, validating dependencies, coordinating testing, and minimizing production impact.
- Analyzes storage growth, workload trends, and throughput patterns to identify near- to mid-term capacity risks and recommend mitigation actions.
- Produces high-quality RCAs, technical documentation, and reusable support patterns, while mentoring junior engineers on diagnostic methods and operational discipline.
- Assists with penetration testing and validating database protections, identifying and recommending steps for remediation.
- Participates in and strengthens disaster recovery planning, backups, and database restore testing.
- Develops and maintains automation to streamline administrative tasks, reporting, and operational support.
- Collaborates with infrastructure, development, and application support teams to deliver database solutions that align with project goals and technical standards.
What You'll Need to Bring- Candidates should demonstrate the relevant experience, skills, and capabilities needed to successfully perform in the role. Relevant experience may be gained through current responsibilities, prior roles, project work, leadership opportunities, or other comparable experiences.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
- Proven MySQL administration experience (8.0 or newer); this will be the primary support focus to start.
- Proven PostgreSQL administration experience, applied as part of a mixed MySQL/PostgreSQL estate.
- Strong understanding of high-availability and high-transaction database environments, including replication.
- Demonstrated ability to perform advanced performance tuning and deep analysis of queries, execution plans, blocking, and deadlocks.
- Working knowledge of cloud-hosted database deployments on AWS EC2 and RDS.
- Proficiency in Bash scripting for automation, and a solid foundation in Linux administration and IP networking.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior engineers and collaborate across teams.
Nice-to-Haves- Experience with additional database platforms (e.g., MSSQL, Snowflake, MongoDB).
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
- Familiarity with CI/CD concepts as applied to databases.
- Experience working in a hybrid cloud/on-prem environment.
- Awareness of compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR) and how they impact database operations.
