Senior Database Administrator Location: Wayne, PA Team: Application Development Job Type: Information Technology FT/PT Status: Full Time
Job Title: Senior Database Administrator Location: Wayne, PA Your Role: As a Senior Database Administrator, you will be part of the team managing and optimizing our enterprise-class SQL Server environment. You will be responsible for database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, performance and optimization, security, backups, disaster recovery and ongoing maintenance. You'll work closely with development, infrastructure, security and business teams to support critical applications, troubleshoot issues and improve database reliability and scalability. You will be expected to be proactive, hands-on and focused on delivering stable, high-performing database solutions. You'll also help set and enforce standards, mentor team members and drive excellence in data management practices.
Key Responsibilities: - Database management : Administer and maintain SQL Server instances and databases, including installation, configuration, patching and upgrades, while ensuring optimal performance, reliability and security and optimizing costs
- High availability/disaster recovery: Install, administer and maintain Windows Failover Clusters, SQL Server Always On availability groups, replication and failover plans to ensure business continuity in the event of a hardware failure or regional outage
- Monitoring and performance tuning: Proactively monitor database performance, conduct tuning activities and implement improvements to enhance performance and efficiency
- Backup and recovery: Develop and implement backup (full, differential and log) and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability in case of failures; regularly test recoveries; and establish recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs) in partnership with application and business teams
- Data security: Implement security measures to safeguard sensitive data, including managing logins and roles, enabling encryption and auditing activities to help prevent data from being breached or misused
- Capacity planning: Analyze capacity and utilization trends; forecast compute, memory, storage and I/O requirements; and recommend scaling or optimization actions while balancing performance, resilience and cost
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve database-related issues in a timely manner, collaborating with other teams as appropriate
- Support and mentoring: Support and mentor other database administrators, fostering their growth and development
- Collaboration: Work closely with architects and developers to optimize database interactions with applications and support ongoing system enhancements
- Continuous learning: Stay current with evolving database technologies and recommend upgrades and improvements
What You'll Bring: - Technical expertise : Demonstrate advanced skills in Microsoft SQL Server (2012-2025) across on-premises and Azure environments
- HADR architecture: Demonstrate hands-on experience with SQL Server Always On availability groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering and log shipping, as well as implementing optimal backup and restore processes
- Performance optimization: Demonstrate deep knowledge of server, database and query tuning, including analyzing query execution plans, developing indexing strategies and interpreting wait statistics
- Monitoring: Demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience with database monitoring using appropriate tools, monitoring server resource consumption and trends, and setting up and tuning alerts and notifications
- Automation skills: Demonstrate proficiency in PowerShell scripting, T-SQL scripting and stored procedures to automate and streamline processes
- Analytical mindset: Demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail and a proactive approach
- Team collaboration: Demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with diverse teams, as well as guide and train other DBAs
- Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, processes, procedures, runbooks and data retention policies
Qualifications: - Education : College degree, technical certification or equivalent industry experience
- Experience: More than 10 years of SQL Server administration experience in transactional or data warehouse environments
- Technical skills: Expertise in T-SQL, Extended Events, Query Store, DMVs, execution plans, wait statistics, Management Studio, Always On, Windows Server Failover Clustering, PowerShell, SQL Sentry, Redgate, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS
- Preferred experience: Experience with Azure SQL PaaS, Cosmos DB, versioning and automated database deployments
- Soft skills: Strong communication, organizational, mentoring, problem-solving and team-oriented skills
