JOB DESCRIPTION

Senior Estimator

Department: Earthwork, Roadway, Drainage, Utilities
Reports To: Chief Estimator: Coach and Quality Assurance
FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY

The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading civil site construction cost estimation, analyzing project scope, preparing competitive bid proposals, and collaborating across project teams. This role involves conducting quantity takeoffs, evaluating subcontractor pricing, assessing project risks, and assisting in managing estimators to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality bid submissions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Analyze project scope: Review blueprints, technical specifications, and other project documentation to understand the full scope of work.
• Perform quantity takeoffs: Accurately measure and quantify the amount of materials, labor, and equipment needed to complete the Earthworks, Roadways, Drainage, and Utilities. This step is often supported by specialized estimating software (B2W Estimate, Agtek Gradework, Planswift, & Office Suite).
• Solicit and evaluate bids: Collect and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing for all aspects of the project.
• Collaborate with project teams: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to develop bid strategies, present findings, and make recommendations for cost-saving measures or risk mitigation.
• Prepare and submit proposals: Assemble all gathered data into a comprehensive and well-organized cost estimate and bid proposal for clients or bidding competitions.
• Identify and assess risks: Factor potential project variables, such as weather delays, material shortages, or difficult site conditions, into the estimate.
• Attend Comprehensive Kickoff Meeting
• Conduct Site Visit and Attend Pre Bid Meetings
• Assign Takeoff to with Estimator/JR Estimator
• Review All Takeoffs with Estimator/JR Estimator checking for accuracy
• Review RFI's With Estimator/JR Estimator before sending
• Review Bid Documents/Specs/Addendums/Revisions/RFI Responses
• Input Takeoff into B2W to create pay items adjust labor and quantities
• Review Input subcontractor pricing ensuring scope coverage and accuracy
• Review Input vendor pricing ensuring scope coverage and accuracy
• Request any additional pricing needs by subs or vendors
• Input pricing for any items/task not included in the vendor/sub comparison tool
• Adjust indirect cost, overhead and profit
• Print proposal, calculations, soil report, RFI Answers, and any other pertinent information to review with chief estimator & Precon Manager
• Schedule Bid Review with Management
• Conduct Bid Review with management & estimating team
• Adjust bid as required by management team
• Print Proposal and Calculation and put in project folder
• Review Sod and Concrete Exhibit match scope in proposal
• Place all correspondence, quotes, and information in project folder
• Conduct Bid Process Review Meeting
• Negotiate with customers on any changes needed to balance bids
• Provide award for a project or a letter of intent to the senior and chief estimator
• Conduct a handoff meeting with the PM team
• Assist in change orders as needed (Overlays,Earthworks,Pricing)
• Attend Project Review Meeting After Job in Completed
• Send Proposal, Sod Exhibit, and Concrete Exhibit to Customer
• Deliver Bids as Needed for Bid Openings
• Attend Bid Openings and record results of the project
• Follow up with customer within 48 Hours after bid was provided
• Log Bid on Bid Schedule
• Update Status of Bids as new information is provided

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
Experience: 5+ years of proven experience in construction estimating, preferably in heavy civil construction, earthwork, roadway, drainage, and utilities. As a Senior Estimator, the ability to manage, mentor, and support Estimators and Junior Estimators is required
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, civil site development, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, and project documents.
Estimating Skills: Experience with quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, bid preparation, subcontractor/vendor pricing, and proposal development.
Software Proficiency: Experience with estimating and takeoff software such as B2W Estimate, Agtek Gradework, Planswift, and Office Suite.
Leadership Skills: Ability to manage, mentor, and review the work of Estimators and Junior Estimators.
Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate costs, risks, and project requirements.
Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with project teams, clients, subcontractors, vendors, and leadership.
Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure accuracy in quantities, pricing, scope, and final estimates.
