Scientist, MS&T Materials and Cryogenics ScienceDepartment: MS&T Global Science & Technical Strategy
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVEThe Scientist, MS&T Materials and Cryogenics Science supports the lifecycle management and technical understanding of materials used in late-stage and commercial biopharmaceutical manufacturing, including raw materials, excipients, consumables, and single-use systems. The role applies materials science and engineering principles to material selection, qualification, change assessment, investigations, technical risk assessment, and network implementation. The Scientist works independently under limited supervision, collaborates across functions, and contributes to scientifically sound, compliant, and practical material control strategies.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Apply materials science and engineering principles to the lifecycle management of raw materials, excipients, consumables, and single-use systems used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Provide technical support for material selection, evaluation, qualification, implementation, change controls, alternate or second sourcing, and technical transfers.
- Assist with and/or lead material-related investigations of moderate risk or complexity, including data review, root-cause analysis, impact assessment, and development of scientifically justified recommendations.
- Prepare and design or review protocols, methods, experimental plans, technical assessments, risk assessments, reports, presentations, and CMC documentation, as appropriate.
- Analyze and interpret data, draw appropriate conclusions, identify gaps, and recommend logical next steps that support scientific, compliance, regulatory, supply, and manufacturing outcomes.
- Plan or support laboratory and external testing, as applicable, including material characterization and validation activities. Evaluate study results and document conclusions.
- Support development and maintenance of material specifications, control strategies, technical standards, procedures, and reference information.
- Critically assess assigned projects to identify technical risks or issues and contribute to implementation of new solutions, plans, or approaches.
- Identify and execute process or system improvements and may lead improvement projects of low or moderate complexity.
- Manage technical projects within the functional area and increasingly coordinate project resources, deliverables, and interfaces to meet commitments.
- Collaborate with Process Development, MS&T/Manufacturing Technology, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, Technical Product Teams, third-party laboratories, suppliers, and other partners.
- May act as a technical point of contact, train others on procedures, or provide functional mentoring to more junior colleagues.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience. Time spent in advanced degree programs may be considered as equivalent relevant experience.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant materials science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, polymer science, analytical science, or a related scientific/technical discipline.
- Proficiency in applying a wide range of scientific or operational principles, procedures, and techniques, with broad knowledge of related disciplines or areas of specialization.
- Knowledge of materials used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, such as chemicals, media, excipients, filters, tubing, assemblies, containers, consumables, and single-use systems, is preferred.
- Working knowledge of cGMP, good documentation practices, CMC expectations, regulatory requirements, and associated business or documentation processes.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data, troubleshoot technical problems, apply risk management, and develop clear scientific recommendations.
- Ability to prepare high-quality formal reports, technical assessments, protocols, presentations, and other controlled or regulatory-supporting documentation.
- Effective project organization, prioritization, communication, and collaboration skills in a matrixed and cross-functional environment.
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision, adapt standard methods when appropriate, and consult management on complex or sensitive decisions.
CONTACTSThe Scientist works routinely with colleagues and leaders across MS&T, Process Development, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Supply Chain, Procurement, Technical Product Teams, and site operations. The role may also interact with external suppliers, contract laboratories, industry partners, and regulatory representatives, as appropriate to assigned responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONSPrincipal assignment is in a modern office and/or laboratory environment. Work may require entry into manufacturing, warehouse, utility, or laboratory areas and adherence to applicable safety, gowning, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Limited travel may be required to support network activities.
DECISION MAKINGMakes decisions that require critical evaluation of information from a range of sources and selection among multiple options to resolve moderately complex problems. Uses risk management within the discipline, develops recommendations for the project or workstream team, and contributes to decisions affecting the broader work group or project team. Consults management before sensitive or high-impact decisions.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks independently under limited supervision for most tasks. Receives direction primarily for unusual or complex problems and consults the manager primarily on complex issues or decisions. Work is reviewed periodically for technical judgment, scientific quality, and accuracy.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDNo formal people-management responsibility. May provide technical guidance, training, or functional mentorship to colleagues, contractors, co-ops, or project team members, as appropriate.
